Russ Baker: Watergate Revelations: The Coup Against Nixon, Part 1 of 3

The media were excited to report that Robert Redford is working on a documentary about the scandal that brought down a president and created new heroes: the reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Given that the film All the Presidents Men, in which Redford played the heroic Bob Woodward, practically made Redfords career, we probably shouldnt expect any big surprises.
But heres one: In recent days, weve heard doubts from former Washington Post Executive Editor Ben Bradlee about his journalists reporting on Watergate. This from a new book by Woodwards own former assistant:

H/T to our fellow DUer Octafish for bringing this to my attention. The entire 3 part series is well worth reading. I may even get Russ Baker's book, Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, Americas Invisible Government and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years.

(11,064 posts)If the absence of a succent description, we would have to read a book or portions of it to understand what the "new" revelations are?
There was a coop against Nixon? Someone who worked with Bernstein is skeptical as to whether he ever actually met in an underground garage with his source?
How does this or any of the details change the fact that Nixon was responsible for his own actions? No one forced him to do the things that he did, including firing Archibold Cox, the special prosecutor who was assigned to investigate the Watergate break-in and cover-up.

(37,457 posts)Nixon deserved to be impeached based on the historical record. All I can say honestly is, you have to read the linked material and make up your own mind of its worth. I'm not going to vouch for its 100% accuracy, but I think it's worth reading. YMMV.

The point is not that Nixon was a saint, but how he lost the protection and confidence of the rich and powerful who he needed to stay in power.

(37,457 posts)I was glued to the media about Watergate but some of the stuff Baker unearthed I've never seen. If Baker's account is 100% correct, everyone got fooled.
