I work with dying Trump supporters. It's...confusing

I’m driving down a gravel road in rural North Carolina, looking at mailbox numbers. A hospice social worker, I’m headed to meet Petey, a patient dying of metastatic cancer. When I’d called his wife Jackie to schedule our first visit, she’d told me they’d been married more than 60 years. “I can’t believe this is happening,” she’d said, her voice heavy with sadness. “I don’t know how I’m going to make it in this world when he’s gone.”

A few homes down I see a ranch style house with a Trump flag hanging limp from what looks like a homemade flagpole. Hell no, not that one, I think, before realizing the number I’m looking for is on a grey mailbox at a driveway leading to that very house.

My eyes harden with anger. A thought pops into my head that I’m not proud of. “Good, he’ll be dead by November. One less vote for that bloated orange fascist.”

As I roll down the driveway, my mind lights up with stereotypes about the people I am about to meet. Stupid. Gullible. Easily manipulated. Incapable of critical thinking. Racist. Willing to rationalize and/or cheer on violence against people they have dehumanized (Blacks, Muslims, people in the LGBTQ community). I assume they don’t give a damn about democracy and are likely to have negative judgments about progressive-minded people like me (I fail to see the irony).

about your determination, your ability to put aside your negative feelings, and do your job leaves me feeling in awe of your strength and determination! This story told here is humbling, and very pointed, and stirred up very strong emotions in me when I read it. If true, I'm glad that they shared their story w/ all of us.

We must keep the faith! One day, this abject failure of a human being, djt, will be gone. I can already see multitudes of people flocking to the streets when tRUMP kicks the bucket, and the massive burst of joy throughout the land on what has been a curse to afflict this land of ours is finally gone, and his toxic spew of hate and everything else that comes along w/ it will be gone. The days of spewing hate, and all other such tools of tRUMP's foul tradecraft will be gone.

Even though I cannot understand why they believe and support Trump and Republican lies, I still want them to have good healthcare and education, food security and a safe job that pays a livable wage.

Many of them seem to want to punish me and fellow liberals by taking things away and are even willing to give up things that make their own lives better in order to hurt us.

Literally. Years of listening to Limbaugh and the like has convinced them to hate everything liberal, to conquer everything liberal, to destroy everything liberal and they bought into it. That's what has killed bipartisanship. There's been no comparative media entity on the progressive side, not to say that progressives would even accept that sort of claptrap whose only purpose is to stir up hate.

Agreed.

And it illustrates the sophistication and compassion of progressives; the fundamental liberal principle of respecting each individual and his right to self-determination, no matter how much we may disagree.

But we didn’t start this war.

Trump and his supporters represent an imminent, existential threat to democracy, the rule of law, the Constitution, and the country itself – no matter how naive, gullible, delusional, or victimized by Trump’s fearmongering and lies and his rhetoric of violence, racism, bigotry, fear, and hate.

And however distasteful or unfortunate, liberals need to fight this war to defend democracy and the rule of law, including fighting against Trump’s ignorant, weak-minded, victimized supporters.

The way they have been programmed, words trigger them. Situations trigger them. I deal with maga all the time in my business. A situation, a word, a phrase comes up, and the look on their face changes. It can get really ugly. They start repeating the latest maga phrase, as if hypnotized. They're like little sleeper cells.

Another is that we're all sinners, we just justify our own while pointing fingers at other people.

Another is that we've all been suckered at one point or another in our lives and we're all pretty ashamed of it when we finally figure it all out. The conceit is that we'll never get suckered again. But we do.

Another is that none of us get to make the rules for anyone else, something that annoys those of us who wore scrubs with stethoscopes around our necks. People are ornery and we're not omniscient.

We're just now starting to see how differently our brains can be wired and we know from longitudinal studies that the behaviors start in early childhood. Dr. Robert Sapolsky has gone far in the other direction, positing that there's no real thing as free will.

Well, I think there is. While we're hard wired to be who we are and what we feel comfortable with in our lives, the free will come in how we choose to react to people outside our area of greatest comfort.

And that's what keeps the people in scrubs with stethoscopes around their necks this side of sanity. Well, that and becoming slectively deaf to TVs in patient rooms.

I'm assuming the social worker is also white, non Trans, and probably non Hispanic, and is welcomed to offer this dying man and his family support. It doesn't change their choice to not only support Trump, but to advertise that they do so. This also is a truth.

That's a gobsmacking powerful point.

It reminded me of the book "When Prophecy Fails" by Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter.

...and thus laugh and cry and mourn like all of us. But they are unknowlegeable, incurious and judgmental people - full stop.
They're lunatics with "guns" and their "bullets" are votes. I'm actually relieved (not grave dancing but just g-damned relieved) when a Trump voter dies because their ability to get to the polls and vote may be a life and death situation for many of us. If Trump wins most any of us with 10 - 30 years of living left is going to be FUCKED. Sorry if that's harsh because it's the reality folks.

I grew up an atheist in Mormon Utah. I finally learned all I can do is show people, by example, I am not what the think liberal atheists are.

And I told them at my retirement party when I said: I hope I'm remembered not only for what I did here but who I was, a Democrat and an atheist that you liked in spike of that.

I got a round of applause.

Programs are initiated by Progressives for those who are dying.
Even for those who adore TSF.
Even for those who vote Republican.
Republicans have no program of care beyond, "Feel sickly? Then die quickly!"

Perusing photographs from that era is eerie. Germans enjoying sunny days in the park. On their way to get a Christmas tree. Such pictures even come out of Dachau. Staff enjoying the holidays.

I loved the essay and agreed with a lot of his points. But good people are capable of terrible things. It's happened all through history and it will happen again.
