News Giant in Japan Seen as Being Compromised
By MARTIN FACKLERFEB. 2, 2014
TOKYO First, there was the abrupt resignation of the public broadcasting chief accused by governing party politicians of allowing an overly liberal tone to news coverage. Then, his successor drew public ire when he suggested the network would loyally toe the government line.
Days later, on Thursday, a longtime commentator for the network angrily announced that he had resigned after being ordered not to criticize nuclear power ahead of a crucial election, unleashing new criticism.
<snip>
But the current controversies at NHK have also stoked Japanese liberals fears about Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his supporters, who critics believe are behind what they call the efforts to muzzle criticism amid a push to impose an expansive right-wing agenda.
<snip>
... a parliamentary committee summoned Katsuto Momii, the new president of the broadcaster, to explain remarks at a recent news conference, including his declaration that overseas broadcasts would present the governments views on foreign policy without criticism.
<snip>
The comments seemed to run counter to the stated mission of the broadcaster, which is funded by fees collected from everyone who owns a television set, to report the news without distortion or partisanship.

Worth reading in full, there's a lot more.
NHK is now a propaganda outlet pushing the neocon agenda.

(18,646 posts)1. I just read that NHK now says America brought Japan into WWII.
Japan went into China to free it from White rule and the rape of Nanjing never happened.
So I guess Abe honoring the war criminals wasn't a faux pas.
He genuinely wants to restore the old right wing military mindset to Japan.
This doesn't sound good.

How Japans BBC is rewriting its role in Second World War
DAVID MCNEILL TOKYO Friday 07 February 2014
Naoki Hyakuta says Japan was lured into the Second World War by America while liberating Asia from white colonialism.
He denies war crimes such as the 1937 Nanjing massacre, when Japanese troops killed thousands of Chinese civilians. Such views are common among revisionists in Japan. Mr Hyakuta, however, sits on the board of the nations public service broadcaster.
NHK has annual revenue of more than $6bn (£3.7bn), putting it close to the BBC. Like the British broadcaster, it is obliged to be impartial and aloof from the political fray, so the company is under intense fire for the extraordinary views of four its governors, all reportedly handpicked by the right-wing Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe. The 12-member board controls programming policy and budgets.

(18,646 posts)4. I think that was it.
Wow, I hope this gets stopped before it goes much further.
My kids are half Japanese and I've been proud of that.
If Japan returns to Tojo's mindset my pride may turn into shame.
