Funny thing was one of them lambasting all "immigrants" for ruining our country, turned right around and gave me a straight answer to "so where did your lineage immigrate from?" He answered with approximately all 3rd generation european. No native blood mentioned at all.
I left that as it was, did not reply again.

(239 posts)I'm not kidding, I'm STILL reading the comments there and laughing at them! I know it's "elitist" and "mean" to laugh at ignorance, but hey, if you have internet (and if you are posting on the Coke FB page, you have internet!) and continue to be that ignorant - you are making a CHOICE to not understand the world, or know about things beyond your front door. That, I feel absolutely okay with laughing at. I also really love the "You are racist for calling us racists!"... oh, and, "Why are we all talking in English on here then if it's not our language?". I'm telling you, I cannot wait until this part of our society no longer exists - it HAS to go away at some point, right? I mean, what percentage of the population do they represent now? Less than a quarter, right? Or, is that just those too stupid to be quiet?

(15,262 posts)a good choice, but Navajo would be better.
There's no such thing as "Native American". The Cherokee and Navajo came from Asia, they immigrated over the Bering Strait. Even the term "Native American" is a modern invention and had historically it would have had no meaning to the Cherokee or Navajo.
Coyotl
(15,262 posts)Also, there was no Bering Strait back then.
Also, they did not immigrate, they migrated over time.
Why 15,000? Why not 15 years, or 150? It seems like a bit of an arbitrary place to draw the line.
In fact, there were several different waves of migration over thousands of years, when the Bering Strait wasn't under water. The earliest wave were white and Black. The Olmecs were Black, and Kennewick Man and the Solutreans were white. Some of the Asian tribes came later and ethnically cleansed the white and Black population, so really the Cherokee and Navajo have no more claim to America than anyone else.
Coyotl
(15,262 posts)Your info is seriously flawed and hints of racism. Are you a troll?
They worshipped white gods. The Incas worshipped Viracocha who was a white man, and the Aztecs worshipped Quetzalcoatl, who was also a white man. When the Spanish first arrived, they thought it was the gods returning.
Are you denying this?
RoccoR5955
(12,471 posts)Is because these "gods" were actually space travelers, trying to communicate with them. If you look, they all have space ships, and they all look like grey aliens, in one way, shape or form.

That's right, anthropology is highly politicized these days, so you're not allowed to use the word "race". However, we all know the reality of race; we just have to use the latest politically correct euphemism to describe it instead. It all amounts to the same basic thing though.

(14 posts)There's nothing scientific about it. Scientists are happy enough to differentiate and classify the rest of the living world into genus, species, sub-species, etc; the only reason some scientists are reluctant to apply normal biological classification schemes to humans is for political reasons. Science was kicked out of anthropology a long time ago. It really took hold in the 60s and 70s, but it has earlier roots with the charlatan Franz Boas.
In the medical field, physicians and scientists can't afford to be politically correct because people's lives are at stake. Ask them about racial characteristics. You'll get a more honest answer from them than you will from highly-politicized social anthropologists.
nomorenomore08
(13,324 posts)If anthropology in the past basically consisted of trying to prove the white race's superiority, then I'm not going to cry "political correctness" just because that's changed for the better.

The petty meanness has no end with some people, and they wish to rule over everyone. Stupidity endures.
Also the hypocrisy, such a song, or exercise (even if flawed) attempts brotherhood and unity. When someone is not of their liking and association they complain about that person's divisiveness.
Coca-Cola has clever advertising. Coca-Cola has some vicious business practices. Their commercials often are artful. The comments are made just on the art and spirit of the commercial, which were lovely.

(45,984 posts)I would like against to make my pitch for decoupling the terms conservative and right wing. When they are conflated, we get those ridiculous moments like last week when RNC chairman Reince Priebus demands MSNBC President Phil Griffin to be made to all "right of center" Americans for a tweet saying that "right wingers" will hate the new Cheerios TV spot featuring a bi-racial American family. The really ridiculous part is that Phil Griffin actually apologized.
A conservative is a person with whom I disagree more often than not, but who is capable of making a rational case for keeping taxes low. At least he's expecting some bang for his buck when the government takes it. I wouldn't include the modern Reagan worshipers as conservatives, since one cannot possibly make a rational argument to cut taxes on the "job creators" since, first of all, all empirical evidence shows that cutting taxes to this level on the wealthy starves state and local governments for revenue that might be used for such unnecessary things as repairing roads, preparing for hurricanes or educating children and second, "job creators" have an abysmal record of creating jobs in the decade since the Frat Boy and the Republicans drastically cut their taxes.
A right winger is more interested in social values than economic issues, and his interest is what groups to exclude from social or political participation. Generally speaking, these people are bigots or one kind or another and usually several at once. These are the people who call the late Trayvon Martin a "thug" with no evidence that his behavior fit that epithet and conflate speaking Spanish with being a illegal alien, as in the above remarks on the Coca Cola spot. These are the people who support using voter ID to bar people they don't want voting from polling places and forcing women contemplating terminating a health threatening or otherwise unwanted pregnancy to get a vaginal ultrasound. They assume all Muslims are terrorists, all blacks are stupid, lazy and violent, all Hispanics are illegal aliens no matter where they born and any woman who insists on making her own health decisions is a slut. In short, they are racists, sectarian bigots and misogynists. It is no wonder why the sentiments expressed by these people about the Coca Cola ad are more fitting coming from a member of the Ku Klux Klan than a Republican member of Congress, or at least it used to be before Jesse Helms became the model for Republican members of Congress.
Which brings us back to Reince Priebus and his insistence last week that Phil Griffin apologize to all Americans "right of center." Neither Mr. Griffin nor anyone else owe an apology to the reprobates in the Ku Klux Klan or the neo-Nazi movement, to misogynists like Mike Huckabee or Phyllis Schlafly (yes, she's a misogynist), to sectarian bigots like Pam Geller or Frank Gaffney or to social elitists like Dave and Charlie Koch, who think they have some divine right to rule over the rest of us because they have money. Mr. Priebus knows what his party represents these days when he demanded an apology from a television executive for a tweet directed at "right wingers" who would find something intrinsically offensive about a biracial family and didn't use the word the word "Republican" at all. By demanding such an apology, Republican National Committee Chairman Priebus has admitted that the his party is no longer conservative, but aligned with the worst and lowest elements on the right wing.

(2,322 posts)...the commercial came on and the "Oh Beautiful" switched from English to Spanish (I think that's the first transition) that conservative heads would be exploding all around the country. Laughed my own head off thinking of teabaggers with their "all american" beers, all nestled in their armchairs with American and Confederate and "don't tread on me!" flags on the walls behind them, enjoying the start of it, thinking it was going to be something right up their alley with a cowboy on a horse and all then....
Bam! Blindsided. First shot to the heart with that first language switch (how dare it be sung in any language other than English), and final shot to the head with the woman in the headscarf toward the end (Islamics can't be American!)....
I knew exactly what I'd be hearing from them today concerning that ad. And I'm not disgusted; I'm pretty satisfied. Thanks Coca-Cola for upsetting these assholes so outrageously (and beautifully as it is a beautiful commercial).

(2,322 posts)Which is to say that, unlike soccer, American football is not watched globally. It features a game played almost exclusively in America with only American teams. Hence, commercials played during the Superbowl are rarely intended for a global audience. Add to this the song "America," a patriotic hymn sung exclusively by Americans, and we can conclude that though Coca-cola is global, the ad was not. The ad was "American" for Americans.
Which is why conservative viewers who think: American = white men who speak English are pissed. Because this is commercial had that patriotic hymn performed in languages other than English (some would consider that sacrilege) and featured people who who were not white men (or at least not all in uniform, which is the only way conservatives accept multiculturalism).
