(25,699 posts)Potatoes actually cover most of the nutritional needs, with protein and vitamin D from the milk. Her other beverages help, of course, but the inca were an entire civilization that for the most part lived off of potatoes - occasional input from anchovies and corn aside.
This sounds like the opposite end of the spectrum from pica.

Health Benefits
Potatoes are a very popular food source. Unfortunately, most people eat potatoes in the form of greasy French fries or potato chips, and even baked potatoes are typically loaded down with fats such as butter, sour cream, melted cheese and bacon bits. Such treatment can make even baked potatoes a potential contributor to a heart attack. But take away the extra fat and deep frying, and a baked potato is an exceptionally healthful low calorie, high fiber food that offers significant protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Our food ranking system qualified potatoes as a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, and pantothenic acid.
Potatoes also contain a variety of phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. Among these important health-promoting compounds are carotenoids, flavonoids, and caffeic acid, as well as unique tuber storage proteins, such as patatin, which exhibit activity against free radicals. http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=48

(25,699 posts)The maasai for instance, live entirely off of blood and milk.. .at least traditionally. I think beef is a rare addition (since cattle are currency in that society, it'd be a hell of a splurge!)
Probably all the old pastoralist societies of the near and middle east as well - thus why the Bible includes prohibitions against the sonsumption of blood, since most of those laws were meant to distinguish the Israelites from nearby tribes

(13,324 posts)I once went through a phase of eating home fries and eggs for breakfast several days a week, though I suppose that's the kind of thing you can get away with when you're 25.

(25,699 posts)Unless of course, you're eating potato-on-white-bread sandwiches chased with a milkshake and a fistfull of jolly rangers before settling down to a plate of fries and two beers for dinner
When i say "they ate potatoes" I mean that's pretty much ALL they ate, it wasn't generous helpings of mashe potatoes on top of fried chicken and a dozen biscuits with a coke.

(13,324 posts)Though it is surprising just how little, nutritionally speaking, a lot of folks can get by on. Decades ago they did a study somewhere in rural Mexico, where they found that even some of the poorest children - whose diet was primarily beans and rice - were surprisingly healthy (i.e. not malnourished) because those two foods together happen to provide a complete protein.

(7,349 posts)I'm not as bad as her, but I was a very picky eater, to the point of obsession. I'm better now, but would definitely panic if I had to eat something I find really disgusting, like clam chowder or boiled cauliflower.

(45 posts)I hate to admit this, but reading the headline I was prepared to be a little snarky and feel just a little superior. I LOVE food and love exploring new things. But I didn't always.
And the thing that stands out here is fear. You can think it's a ridiculous fear, but that doesn't mean it's not powerful.
I learned to try new things because my first summer in college in a foreign country, living with a host family. I HAD to eat whatever was put in front of me. And I wasn't going to embarrass myself by saying, "I can't eat that." When you surrender to it, I think you find you like a lot more foods than you thought you would.
But I feel this woman's pain. I haven't watched until the end, so I'm hoping she makes progress!

(251 posts)This is funny, because I could never understand it, but I had a friend who did exactly the same thing. He would only eat french fries. He never eat anything else as far as I ever saw. His favorite was McDonald's fries but he did the same thing, hold the salt. If we went to a good restaurant, he would specify how to make the fries. It was weird, but he was also one of the smartest people I ever met. He got his master's at MIT and PhD at Stanford, I always thought he was just being eccentric and weird but who knew. I still wonder where they get their protein from. To this day, he's still that way.
