"A deadly US drone strike on a December 2013 wedding procession in Yemen raises serious concerns about US forces' compliance with President Barack Obama's targeted killing policy, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.
The 28-page report, "A Wedding That Became a Funeral: US Drone Attack on Marriage Procession in Yemen," calls on the US government to investigate the strike, publish its findings, and act in the event of wrongdoing. The December 12 attack killed 12 men and wounded at least 15 other people, including the bride. US and Yemeni officials said the dead were members of the armed group Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), but witnesses and relatives told Human Rights Watch the casualties were civilians. Obama said in a major address in May that US policy requires "near-certainty" that no civilians will be harmed in targeted attacks.
"The US refusal to explain a deadly attack on a marriage procession raises critical questions about the administration's compliance with its own targeted killing policy," said Letta Tayler, senior terrorism and counter-terrorism researcher at Human Rights Watch and author of the report."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

(10,007 posts)They are more like mob hits. Weddings and funerals are important family events that draw the targets out into the open, where they (and a dozen or so of their close friends and family) can be killed.
More evidence that we are not at war, and our drones are not being used on battlefields. When was the last time a bride and groom planned their wedding to take place on a battlefield?

(8,821 posts)Our military leadership has used "body counts" to justify the billions of taxpayers' dollars they waste in causing death and destruction. A "good" body count is how they make an argument for how effective their bloody (and often actually counterproductive) methods are in defending our country.
What better way to enhance body counts than to target a mass gathering like a wedding or a funeral? They can almost always say that at least one likely terrorist was undoubtedly present, and the rest were guilty by association.

(27,137 posts)...guarantee large numbers of people either celebrating and/or mourning members of a family present together. Such killings under such circumstances would demand reciprocity and revenge to be extracted from the perpetrators of such crimes. Thus insuring continued conflict and therefore justifying the need for ''on-going and never-ending protection.'' And in particular, conflict that requires a US military presence in a place where all the oil lies beneath the sands. In Afghanistan, it's the rare earths that lies beneath the surface that we covet.
- This is what happens when your country devolves into an outright Police State that is being ruled by criminals on Wall Street and in the energy companies -- who are then wedded to corrupt idiots who serve as our so-called ''leaders.''

(6,785 posts)keep telling every time someone brings up drones. Of course the real answer (They don't think those types of people count as people at all.) would make them unpopular, so the lie that it keeps us safe is all they've got.
It also makes the "We only drone terrorists!" lie sound even sillier. How do you know we only kill terrorists with drone strikes? Because if you're killed by a drone strike, you must be a terrorist, otherwise we wouldn't have killed you with a drone.
