The Trouble at Totten Glacier

The latest “This is Not Cool” video is the third in a trilogy of very important, and sobering, pieces I’ve posted over the last year. I didn’t start with a trilogy in mind, but the developments of the last few months have been jarring and momentous.

Chris Mooney wrote recently in the Washington Post, “A hundred years from now, humans may remember 2014 as the year that we first learned that we may have irreversibly destabilized the great ice sheet of West Antarctica, and thus set in motion more than 10 feet of sea level rise.”.
He added, “Meanwhile, 2015 could be the year of the double whammy — when we learned the same about one gigantic glacier of East Antarctica, which could set in motion roughly the same amount all over again.”

The decades-long unfolding of this story – that vast areas of ice once thought to be invulnerable on time scales meaningful to humans, may in fact already be in the process of disintegration – is one that that the vast majority of humanity still does not understand, and that the media has been unwilling to track. It’s a realization that, one top expert told us, even seasoned ice sheet veterans find “shattering”.

Makes sense that warmer water flowing under the glacier if it is lower...water travels down hill when it is not frozen...curious how humans react if the sea level really begins to rise in next 10 years

... in low-lying coastal areas here and around the planet. Island nations with minimal elevation, particularly in the South Pacific, have already begun to develop emergency mass evacuation plans, and there have already been forced relocations due to the inundation of formerly habitable coastal regions.

In just the past 15 or 20 years, scientists monitoring melting rates and mean temperature rises have been forced to revise time estimates that have been consistently too conservative. And they're always finding that even their most dire predictions are accelerating much faster than they had previously postulated.

In other words, pull up your pants; it's too late to save your shoes.

the discredited "liberal" newscaster. Guess we can't believe him. Is anyone else talking about it? Well, no, so why worry? Besides look at all that snow the east got this winter.. global warming can't be happening because it snows..

The idiot motherfuckers will kill us all with their stupidity. Corporations don't like climate change and that's all that matters to the "news."
