(24,735 posts)I am presently reading a book by Ian Millhiser "Injustices---The Supreme Courts History of Comforting the Comfortable and the Afflicting the Afflicted and I do recommend this book.
And just from the three chapters I have read and from history classes that I had and my participation in organizing unions, this next election is crucial to the workers in this country and if a republican "has been" gets in office ----we might as well start selling apples on the street corners ----literally.
This court has attacked the worker on organizing, wages, benefits health care, majority rule 50+1, pensions ---you name it , while at the same time giver companies like WalMart and Mc Donald's a pass

(50,983 posts)Some of these most profitable companies also get away with paying a pittance in taxes. I would like to hear some of our prospective 2016 candidates address that.

(53,235 posts)of their useless spawn? That's unAmerican. After all, they've earned, er, deserve, yes, they Jesus-deserve all they can take from us.
Don't forget not to patronize a fast food restaurant today. Major protest across the entire world.

(750 posts)Everyday more often, find myself keying up to DU to see how the state of the art in political science is evolving.
However this time to take a moment to tell EarlG how much his pick of the moment usually always is on a cutting edge topic that far exceeds the local main stream media.
This tax issue of subsidizing corporations is a hot button for all citizens. Also tax issues coupled or to be extended to eminent domain issues.
Plus, combining the Medicare plans A B C D so as its not necessary to purchase extra Health Care through AARP or the United Health Care Company which from my view is not only out dated antiquated but loaded with a health data base system that leads to poor recovery and in some areas outright fraud.
All could be paid for by that missing one hundred and fifty two billion dollars swindled by politicians and business.
These are companies that are connected to very serious health care data base systems used for determinations that can advance the science of medicine.
However in my personal experience especially with one of the largest transportation companies like the Union Pacific Railroad implements loyalty programs to avoid proper integrity and responsibility in reporting injuries and recovery. I intend to encourage those in political positions to expose this irregularity.

(10 posts)You could thank that DECRAPITATED Reagan for sending all of the manufacturing down south and to Mexico for cheap labor and breaking up the Unions. Now you have NO representation. You can thank that Donald Regan as well, the Treasury Secretary who worked for Merrill-Lynch. Gee no conflict of interest there. My wife and I were making $4.00/hour in 1978 scrubbing floors at a restaurant. McDonald's should be paying $11-12.00 if that's the case. And they want these entitlements to be cut back. HA HA HA!! A minimum wage couple, working full-time could support a family when I was kid. Now they are basically on Public Assistance.

(5,275 posts)People and corporation being undertaxed is one of them. Cutting Inheritance Tax is another.
Lost revenue makes the deficit bigger. The Oligarchs know this but never speak of it, and their suckers...err supporters can't or won't reach this true conclusion.
Plus...fewer people would need help from the government if CEO to average worker pay would be in the same galaxy like it was just a few decades ago.
We must try mightily to change the dialogue.
I'm hoping against hope that Hillary isn't just going all populist to get progressives to put her over the top just to head straight right once in - ala Obama.

But at least there's a grocery section where you can use your EBT card during your break.

(2,941 posts)usual uninspired and childish cartoons of Ted Cruz et al.
It doesn't take a good Democrat to make fun of Republicans.
It takes a good Democrat to stand up and call out what's broken and needs to be fixed in their own party.
There are BIG BIG problems reducing the quality of life in America. Both political parties are complicit.
We expect bad behavior from Republicans.
But now even Democrats have largely walked away from principals and progress, favoring instead the surety and comfort of the status quo.

(12,821 posts)... in Seattle. The gist of it being, "See how bad this is for the local economy? I have to pay more for a Happy Meal!"
Are there any stats showing whether the economy has taken a hit as consumers theoretically are spending less on eating out, forcing McRestaurants to lay off, cut hours, or close, thereby undoing any good the wage increase was supposed to bring?
'Cuz unless that's actually happening (i.e. in the real world, not the conserva-bubble), then I don't see where the negative of SOME consumers taking an occasional small hit to their disposable income in any way outweighs the big positive of ALL minimum wage workers getting a huge boost to theirs.
