WAR IS A RACKET 1935 Gen. Smedley Butler- Chapter One: War is a Racket

If you've never heard of General Smedley Butler please know he was one of the most decorated members of the Marines in US History.

Smedley Butler

Smedley Darlington Butler[1] (July 30, 1881 – June 21, 1940) was a United States Marine Corps major general, the highest rank authorized at that time, and at the time of his death the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. During his 34-year career as a Marine, he participated in military actions in the Philippines, China, in Central America and the Caribbean during the Banana Wars, and France in World War I. Butler is well known for having later become an outspoken critic of U.S. wars and their consequences, as well as exposing the Business Plot, a purported plan to overthrow the U.S. government.

By the end of his career, Butler had received 16 medals, five for heroism. He is one of 19 men to receive the Medal of Honor twice, one of three to be awarded both the Marine Corps Brevet Medal and the Medal of Honor, and the only Marine to be awarded the Brevet Medal and two Medals of Honor, all for separate actions.

In 1933, he became involved in a controversy known as the Business Plot, when he told a congressional committee that a group of wealthy industrialists were planning a military coup to overthrow Franklin D. Roosevelt, with Butler selected to lead a march of veterans to become dictator, similar to other Fascist regimes at that time. The individuals involved all denied the existence of a plot and the media ridiculed the allegations. A final report by a special House of Representatives Committee confirmed some of Butler's testimony.

In 1935, Butler wrote a book entitled War Is a Racket, where he described and criticized the workings of the United States in its foreign actions and wars, such as those he was a part of, including the American corporations and other imperialist motivations behind them. After retiring from service, he became a popular activist, speaking at meetings organized by veterans, pacifists, and church groups in the 1930s.

because he had the guts to tell the truth as he saw it. Public education and much private and higher education is geared toward creating obedient and patriotic workers. Telling them the truth might make them a bit less so.

Thank goodness for public libraries and then the internet. Most of us had to become educated in spite of our schooling, not thanks to it.

should have learned about him in 7th grade history, as the man who saved Democracy, but that would have entailed naming the villains, and that's not the history on core tests .

fascism, etc. Don't mean to step on your OP, but I get worked up about how serious and close that Plot was, Butler's bravery yet lack of recognition, the fascist opposition to FDR. And what we are witnessing today. Just unbelievable, and too many similarities it's distressing-

and the human tragedy of war learned by him from decades of awarded military service as an agent for US imperialist expansion from Cuba to Central America and in the Pacific and China. In 1935, the year of his book, "WAR IS A RACKET", Smedley Butler saw the coming signs of another war with arming by the regimes of Mussolini, Hitler and Japan.

It is disturbing that BUTLER'S life, book and the significant event that took place two years before his publication are so little known and taught in US history. In 1933, US Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Butler was approached by prominent US industrialists about a BUSINESS PLOT in FDR's first year in office and during the height of the Depression. Their plan was to take over the White House in reaction to the new President's policies they despised.
No wonder FDR said, 'I WELCOME THEIR HATRED', presumably referring to political enemies and New Deal antagonists.

Raised in Pennsylvania and of Quaker heritage, Butler was a highly experienced, brave and well liked US soldier and leader. But he refused to participate in the 1933 conspiracy as the proposed head of a veteran's BONUS ARMY fashioned by the wealthy business leaders behind the coup.
At the time, in 1933 thousands of desperate, unemployed and hungry American World War I veterans, many with families- THE BONUS ARMY were camped out in Washington, DC, even on the grounds of the US Capitol in tents and shanties to demand early payment for deferred money from their war service.

For his courage and outspoken views Butler is an exceptional man of integrity and a real American hero. He passed away in 1940 just before the US entered WWII. Print and video material online cover the conspiracy and Butler's connection also some information about the 1934 Congressional investigation of the plot.

*FASCISM. See also, "IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE", 1935 political novel by Sinclair Lewis.
In the 1920s and 1930s fascism was a growing political movement epitomized by the rise of Mussolini, Hitler and Franco. Contributing factors were large numbers of out of work WWI veterans in Europe and the US, the perceived weakness of liberal democracies, increased socialist and communist factions, and major worldwide economic turmoil from the Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression.

Historians attribute part of Hitler's rise in 1933 to the 1929 Crisis which he claimed was driven by 'evil international bankers' that he had railed against since Germany's WWI defeat, humiliation, harsh reparations placed by the Allies and severe economic suffering.

*VIDEO BELOW: Hitler and Nazi officials at the WWII Armistice signing in France 1940.
In June 1940 after Germany's invasion and victory over France, Hitler intentionally chose Compiegne Forest, France to sign the Armistice as revenge since it was the location of Germany's 1918 WWI surrender and Armistice.
~The Compiegne Wagon, the exact same rail carriage from the 1918 Armistice was used for the 1940 negotiations and official event.
