On June 6, 2015 Sen. Bernie Sanders spoke at a community center Town Hall event in Keene, New Hampshire. Over 500 people, and possibly 800 squeezed into the building and spilled into halls to hear the Senator's campaign message.
Sanders addressed the growing issue of national violence against blacks seen in places like Ferguson, Missouri, Baltimore, New York City and others. Police must be well trained and paid, emphasized Sanders, a former mayor of the city Burlington, VT. But, he stressed, we need to hold police officers accountable who commit illegal actions.
The issues we are seeing today have sadly gone on for decades when police treated prisoners terribly, unjustly and in some cases even killed them. That police departments look like invading armies, with heavy military equipment as televised in Ferguson was also a very major concern Sanders said. We also need to do 'community policing', he added, where police officers are integrated, become part of the community, and trust is built with residents who do not see police as oppressors but as those to call on if they have a problem.
Sanders also highlighted that among the reasons for conflict situations like Ferguson is high unemployment. African American youth unemployment in towns like Ferguson is 50%. We spend huge amounts of money and resources putting people in prison and the US has the largest prison population in the world. Instead, Sanders called for us to invest in education, training and jobs which the enthusiastic audience applauded.

(57,936 posts)Anyone who thinks a Jewish kid who grew up in Brooklyn and demonstrated against racism in his youth, a kid who was raised on the history of the Holocaust and NAZI racism doesn't understand in his muscles, in his core, in his soul what racism means, what being classed because of your appearance and the information on your birth certificate means, what being killed by authorities, what having your property taken and destroyed, what being imprisoned for nothing, what being barred from playing on golf courses, being followed when shopping, being ostracized at school, and all the ugliness of racism means, doesn't know their history and needs to learn some.
There is no way that Bernie is soft on racism. Because he knows what it is to be the target of racists. It's rare in the US today, but racism against Jewish people was what his parents knew living in Europe. He probably knows more what it is like than non-Jewish white people. Probably as close to knowing racism against his own family as any person who is not a person of color. That is not so true of Jewish people today. But remember, Bernie was born right before the US entered WWII. Bernie was raised on the stories about the Holocaust and about racial discrimination.
Americans don't realize this. But Jews were considered by the NAZIs to be of a different race. It was nonsense but that is what they thought. The Holocaust was racism at its most extreme. Black people can rest assured that as president, Bernie will be their president, more their president that any prior president. Even more than Clinton or Obama. Simply because of the experiences and education he had in his childhood.
In fact, perhaps unintentionally, the BLM demonstration against Bernie and the talk about his lack of interest in the question of racism is very much the Rovian technique of identifying an opposing candidate's greatest strength and attacking it.
Bernie's greatest strength even though it is not what he talks about the most is his visceral understanding of racism. An understanding that is a part of his having grown up in the period of history and in the family and religion and ethnicity in which he grew up.
This whole thing will blow away in no time.

(41,204 posts)of his background and history and many others. Bernie has been working for decades to help the people and this country with a dedication that is rarely seen in these times. He knows well about racism, discrimination, persecution and poverty and uses every measure of his being to combat it. Thank you so much for this profound essay on what is unknown or sadly overlooked.

(8,629 posts)One of the reasons I support Bernie is because of his stance on these issues. And he's worked on these issues throughout his years in the house and senate, as well as working on the economic issues he's known to champion. A lot of people don't know about it because they'd barely or never heard of him until now, because he's been about doing his job as Senator for Vermont...but i know, because I've been watching and appreciating him for many years now.

"REP. BARBARA LEE: BERNIE SANDERS' MESSAGE "RESONATING", "GALVANIZING PROGRESSIVES":
"And I think by the turnout and by the response of people around the country, we see that his message is resonating so I think it's a good thing he's out there".
-California Rep. Barbara Lee, a key leader of progressive House Democrats says she believes Bernie's candidacy is galvanizing progressives and the progressive agenda.
"I know Bernie first as a colleague and as a friend, I did serve with him on the then- Banking Committee, and wound up with, initially, the National Housing Trust Fund, worked together on that, and so I've worked with him on many, many issues and he's a friend, Lee said on the 'Jeff Santos Show'.
Last week Sanders supporters filled the 10,000 seat Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin. "I'm supporting the progressive agenda, Mayor DeBlasio, myself, and probably 8 to 10 members of Congress signed on to a progressive agenda that we are putting forward, that addresses many of the issues that Sen. Clinton and Sen. Sanders are raising.
"And so income inequality, when you look at a living wage, when you look at climate change, there are many, many issues on this progressive agenda that Sen. Clinton and Sen. Sanders are addressing and I think it's a very exciting time that he's doing this".
