(7,299 posts)What if everyone had refused? Bernie wasn't the only one opposed to that action.
"So while it was true that Sanders sought conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War draft, that cannot in any way be conflated with the specific meaning of the term "draft-dodging." Further, Sanders was eligible for student deferments until at least 1964, when he graduated from the University of Chicago. By the time his number came up, Sanders was too old to be drafted."

(9,810 posts)Vietnam. I served from 1971-1975. I am a member of the VFW post 2269 in Wixom, Mi..
I volunteer at our local PVA chapter in Novi, MI..
I am a patient at the VA hospital in Ann Arbor, MI., where I also volunteer a couple days a week.
I talk to many vets of all ages and political bents. At times the subject of politics comes up.
Not all are Democrats, some are very conservative, some are progressive. Some don't vote, some would never miss any election.
I have talked to Trump supporters, Clinton supporters, Sanders supporters. I have met vets that don't have any preferences of the candidates running at this time.
But, in all those talks with the array of different beliefs, I have not found one, not a single solitary vet that does not appreciate what Bernie Sanders has done and the manner he represents Veterans.
I also protested the Vietnam war, I applied for CO status myself. Those were very emotional and turbulent times. I graduated from a very small high school in 1970. We had 63 graduating seniors.
From that class a fully half of those kids were in the service. From that number I lost 19 very good friends. That was just high school. There were others.
I hold no animosity against those who did not serve, I hold no animosity against those who moved to Canada or just were "draft dodgers".
Those people believed in their convictions and had the strength and bravery to stick to those convictions. I admire their stances and them as individuals.
Bernie Sanders is one of those people, he has done much for vets, he has the intestinal fortitude to stand up for his beliefs, then act on them in a very positive manner.
Now tell me why you believe the VFW should not honor Senator Sanders.

(4,769 posts)The Iraq War. But not at those who saw through the bullshit and tried to stop it. They're the fucking heroes. The anger, from the most moral and logical point of view, should be directed at those who lied to get us into the wars.
I served in the Air Force and support Sanders 100%.

I feel sorry for your friend, he is still angry. When you are healthy, you don't get angry when other people are not in the circumstances that you are in. While I may envy those who have won the genetic lottery, I certainly don't hate them. I don't even hate those that break the rules, I just hope that they end up paying the price.
Life is what it is, you can't change the past, no matter how much you want to. Bernie fights hard for the veterans, which included funding the war that he didn't want. He knew that if there was no funding, that it would be the soldiers that would suffer and they were suffering enough already.

(463 posts)I am a combat veteran-US Army-Vietnam 1970. I am also US Army retired 100% disabled as a result of that service. At the time I looked down on those who got deferments or applied for CO status. As I grew older and learned how much we had been lied to, I changed my opinion. If we have a war, the people who support that war should volunteer to fight, not some young kid who has no idea why he is there. The people who support the war should also be the ones who pay for it. If no one is willing to pay the tab, or pick up a rifle and fight, we shouldn't be fighting that war. If Bernie gets in, we will have an honest President who will not send troops to kill and die for economic interests, empire-building, or ego building. We need a strong military, and intelligent honest leaders. We haven't had that kind of leadership for some time now. Bernie could supply that.
