Yes, did you did how hard that thing hit the ground? Ligyron Sep 2017 #3
Yeah, they basically fire reactive armor explosives to slow it down before touchdown. AtheistCrusader Sep 2017 #4

Muscle atrophy.

Looks like she needed some assistance in that picture.

But everyone needs assistance after a long stint in space, and the Soyuz entry and landings are pretty rough. Landing crews take no chances.

Water seems a bit more forgiving to me but the Russians have always done it this way.

Like a friggin tank trying to stop an incoming round. Except it's pushing against the earth.

Leave it to the Russians I guess. Seems to work though.

Edit: NASA astronaut Scott Kelly compared the trip to "going over Niagara Falls in a barrel — that’s on fire."
Edit2: Not reactive armor, but 'solid fuel rockets'.

Still looks like a hell of a bang.

I was wondering if it wasn't something like that. Too much dust and dirt to just be the result of hitting the ground. The noise must be deafening inside I don't care how well insulated that thing is.

What we learn from the low-earth orbit long duration astronauts, will help us when we go through and beyond the van allen radiation belts.
