If Aridzonans want this cretin to do their bidding in DC, it's obvious most of them would benefit from a tent to escape the sun now and then!

(972 posts)I've been watching this fool in action. His only gift is self promotion.
There is a running joke that the most dangerous place to be in Arizona is between Joe Arpaio and a TV camera.
He was elected and re-elected by appealing to the frightened, continually shrieking about The Brown Menace of "Those criminal Illegals".
Anyone that paid a bit of attention became aware of the abuses. The deaths while in custody of multiple inmates at the hands of the staff.
The self-serving blatant cruelties of his treatment of people that were in custody only because they couldn't afford bail while waiting for trial.
One night on the job, I was stopped by a Sherriff's Deputy at a roadblock for a movie shooting. While waiting for things to clear up, we leaned back against the cars and talked for a while. One thing that opened my eyes was when he said "This is the best job I can think of. Sometimes, when I get in the mood to just beat the shit out of someone, there's always someone to oblige me."
My respect for the institution pretty much evaporated right there.
There have been a lot of things that have gone on, under the Arpaio administration: Multiple deaths in custody of inmates that cost the County multiple Millions. The refusal to investigate crimes, even sexual assault of minors, perpetrated against minority populations. Politically motivated investigations, and arrests, of critics and political opponents. That was before even the birther thing. There are far too many things to bring up.
All I can do is repeat a saying that I heard somewhere: "You can't spell crazy without AZ."
And shake my head in disgust.

(36 posts)But we cant count Arpaio out. His message of being tough on crime will probably still resonate with some voters.
Opponent will need to hammer the message that hes a convicted criminal who refused to uphold the law and cannot be trusted to write them.

(15,682 posts)He has a show on MSNBC called The Beat with Ari Melber. He's a lawyer who is always on top of his game when he interviews anyone. Just a FYI. His show is always worth watching.

(7,540 posts)"You say 'tough' to criminals under your conditions, but you don't like when a judge is 'tough' on you?"
And when Arpaio said "did you read that in a book?" so disdainfully. Not this time; not those things you pile up and burn with tiki torches, Herr Joe. I'm guessing he isn't keeping up and thinks that Shithole45 quote asked about was lifted from Fire and Fury.
He reminds me of a lot of old folk in my family who are really stubborn and will pretend not to hear anything they don't like. They have one foot in a parallel dimension where everything favors them and they'll glaze over into it when necessary to avoid hearing someone explain how they were incorrect.

(10,945 posts)I presume you got that from some book, am I correct on that?"
That's at 9:40 - 10:00
Starting at 8:38 about not questioning what the president says ... is great stuff too. "And I support the president no matter what he said". (the interviewer had a bit earlier asked what about Obama in the context of never questioning the president -- neither brought up the birther thing, but Arpaio is still promoting that to this day).
