(6,279 posts)Yes, the war was a bloody stalemate that began with Iraqi forces crossing the Iranian border in force with the intention of seizing and holding territory. Which is pretty much the dictionary definition of an invasion.

(6,279 posts)And pretty much every online source on the war begins with a sentence saying something like "in 1980, Iraqi forces invaded Iran..." So it's not just me saying so

(7,277 posts)Indeed he did, and was stopped 80 miles in. But Iraq was not attempting to invade Iran as such - 'merely' the neighboring province of Khuzestan. They wanted some nearby oilfields, and the Shatt al-Arab waterway. They didn't get very far.

(17,989 posts)It was primarily a stalemate in and around the existing border with minor incursions by both sides. Certainly no invasion.

(22,913 posts)invasion of Okinawa alone. The coastline of all the Japanese islands is riddled with thousands of caves and tunnels excavated for local defense units. Japan was only occupied by US troops when the country had agreed to an unconditional surrender.
