I have seen this musical live twice in Denver, both times those venues were packed, I heard it was a flop on Broadway in London, not sure about New York. Some beautiful music, in my opinion. Mind you, if you ever get a chance to see it live, it may run close to 3 hours. My ass was numb, it was worth it.

(13,485 posts)I was thinking...
There was this one night in Bangkok,
In my room I was held by a padlock.
With my dick in a brace,
It hung in disgrace,
Cause I realized I'd just fucked a haddock.

(5,547 posts)It was the soundtrack of my college years. That song came out my freshman year and someone bought the album. It spread and became popular among a surprisingly large group considering we were college kids. I even got my parents and brothers hooked on it.
Sadly I have never seen it. I actually spent a year in London while it was playing and never got around to it. But I was a poor college kid and had other things on my mind
Looking back on it now, it is such a snapshot of the Cold War. Seems almost quaint now.
I get obsessed with a musical soundtrack about once a decade. Later came Rent and then Book of Morman. My current obsession is Dear Evan Hansen.

(5,914 posts)Never saw it actually performed as a play. The Cold War era storyline the album presented seemed to be somewhat confused and, overall, pretty half-baked. I seem to recall that they later changed that a few times, and it still was pretty bad.

(5,547 posts)But the story line is really about the personalities. But those personalities live in a pressure cooker because they are the sole combatants in a proxy war. They carry the full weight of their respective Country wanting a victory over a mortal enemy.
I think if you pay too much attention to it as a primary plot line then it is a bit of a mess. But I think of it more as a setting that drives the characters. In the end, all of the characters are really self-absorbed so they soaked in the importance of playing for the larger stakes.
But as you say, the music was good.

(5,547 posts)When it was released, there was another version that came out by a female vocalist that wasn't from the play at all.
That was one of those cases where a song from a musical was really confusing without the story context. It sounded vaguely titillating but didn't make very much sense. It made a lot more sense when you knew they were talking about playing a chess match in Thailand and not getting distracted by the local entertainment.
