The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI finally asked my brother and sister why our father joined the Elks (B.P.O.E.)
in light of the fact that he never did a single thing for his community as far as charitable giving, fundraising for causes, donating his time with projects or helping people in need. He was a member for maybe 2-3 years 40+ years ago. It just didn't make sense.
My siblings independently and respectively responded that Dad joined the Elks for the food. That's right, the food. Only the food.
I'm still wrapping my head around that one . . . . .
I've never heard of anyone joining the Masons for their pancake breakfasts or their beefsteak dinners. WTF?

My father never joined, but a friend's step father was an Elk.A few times each summer she would take some of us with her on an Elk outing.

(3,769 posts)we were members of the Sons of Hermann lodge. We got low cost life insurance. I think just a small amount that would cover a funeral if any of us kids died. We also got to go to summer camp for a week for something like $20 and dance lessons for very cheap. And there was a Christmas party, an Easter Egg hunt and they had dances for the adult members.

(55,032 posts)I am not sure what he did there (party and drink? he and my Grandmother did dance as well) but sometimes they took us grandkids to fish Friday and the food was a good reason to me!
