But I still think he was a great entertainer. He was just so sharp and quick on the uptake while looking like he was having fun.

while I truly do respect what he did for the industry and the format, I feel that he was just "mailing it in" in his last few years on the show.
But then again, we did let that happen.

At his best, SO funny!

and I watched him throughout my teenage years and until he retired. I loved his show and thought he was incredibly entertaining. Compared to what we're hearing about men now, it's not a big deal to me if he was moody! I knew I was dating someone too young (I'm gay) and I didn't feel that we had that much in common anyway....so when the news broke that he died and she say who's that? I KNEW...I KNEW...this IS NOT going to work! LOL!

And embarrassed to admit Robert Blake also. He was like a grenade about to go off. Some of the topical jokes of the day go over my head because I can't remember who some of his targets were.

who would leave him rolling on the floor with laughter, for sure.
Amazing the number of people who went on to great fame because of his support as a guest on his show. It was a BIG DEAL to be invited over to sit after a "stand-up" bit, and stars were made from there.

It was also interesting to see his reaction to the younger wave of entertainers - he just didn't get it (Jimi Hendricks, Andy Kauffman).

He was so funny with animals, like when Joan Embery from the San Diego Zoo came on,
and also when that guy with the wild animals came on.
(I can't remember his name)

Also, I loved his monologues, especially the jokes written by Pat McCormick.
