I like to bring a cool tabbouleh salad with lots of fresh mint, finely diced tomato, onion & cucumber, parsley. Lots of people have never had it or only had the type that is very cracked bulgar wheat-heavy without the cooling veggies, lemon & oil oil. The former is just too heavy. The latter, to me, goes with anything.

was from Lebanon and she gave me her recipe. It does contain bulgar wheat, but it has tons of fresh parsley, more than most of the tabbouleh I've found in restaurants. If anyone is interested:
1 cup crushed wheat (Burghol) - soak in cold water 2 hrs & drain well
3 large bunches of parsley - chopped in food processor
6 stems green onion - chopped
4 or 5 tomatoes seeded and chopped
Mix together
add salt & pepper, lemon juice (fresh), and olive oil. (to taste)
Mix well and enjoy.

(102,578 posts)with just a tad of the mixed parsley and other ingredients.
i spent a lot of time in the ME. The only thing I add to your recipe is the fresh ground mint (and I add a tiny bit of diced cucumber). My recipe is largely Egyptian, though I've had similar near Damascus.
Lots of ways to make it, but very healthy and great for summer BBQs!

(9,581 posts)Can always add other things. I agree with you, the tabbouleh you find out and about is usually mostly the wheat. I think soaking the wheat helps too, because it otherwise absorbs too much oil and is very heavy. I love it!

(34,142 posts)I used to use this when we had around 20 people over for Christmas or Thanksgiving. It was not as good as the ingredients are not as good that time of year but it filled a nice place and was terrific with cold turkey after the meal.
I am not supposed to eat those things anymore but this is one dish I would cheat with.
Thanks for putting this down, I had forgotten much about it since I cannot eat it.

2 -2lb. Bags Frozen French cut green beans
3 Cans Campbell Cream of Mshroom soup
2 large containers of French's Fried Onions, save 1 for topping
1/2 cup Heavy cream
2 Tbsp. Low sodium Soy Sauce
In large bowl mix all ingredients, save for 1 can of the fried onions. In a large baking dish, use a non stick spray and coat well. Fill baking bish.
Bake at 350 ° F for 50 minutes, uncovered. Add the other can of fried onions for topping, bake for another 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Enjoy.
My adult kids LOVE this dish. It is not a pot luck, Thanksgiving, or Christmas without this dish.

(17,028 posts)Cranberry-pecan chicken salad or turkey and cheese roll ups work great for a stand around function. For a hot weather sit down I like cheese tortellini salad. Super simple to make and tastes better if made the day before. Pick a nice zesty Italian dressing then add black olives, red/yellow/orange sweet peppers, and zuchinni. I don't add meat so it's vegetarian friendly.

(29,791 posts)potatoes whenever their Legion would have a party or some get together.......everyone loved his mashed potatoes and would ask him for his recipe he'd never say exactly how much but he'd always say it's the butter. One day my husband asked him for the real amount he put in the potatoes......Gummy, (that was this guy's name) said, 6 - 8 sticks of butter per 10 lbs of potatoes!!! We thought that was a lot. But man were they delicious.

It's hearty and very cheap to make, even with lots of meat from inexpensive chicken or turkey giblets, necks and wings, and it's something of a treat since most people only get to eat dressing t a couple of times a year.

(2,043 posts)Sort of a Mediterranean style with hard salami, olives, artichokes and sundried tomatoes. The trick is to add some of the oil from all the jars. Then diced red onion and cucumber for crunch. More olive oil and balsamic to taste. Lots of pepper.
It gets raves and its even better the next day. Sometimes I make it ahead and then add the onion and cucumber right before.

(5,485 posts)For a summer picnic type I like to make a 'Texas Coleslaw', which has a vinegar/dry mustard based sauce and no mayo, so it can sit out in the sun all day and not have everyone heaving and squirting all night.
For others I like to either bring smoked ribs or brisket, or do a large wok of fried rice. Sometimes I'll do Italian sausage and peppers with pasta.
With either one, I usually also bring a 5-gallon keg of whatever homebrew I happen to have made recently.

Spread over the mixture in the pan.
