the neighborhood Next Door app - I decided to leave finally - MAGA Wall champion types

Anyone else on that Next Door website/app for their area/neighborhoods?

At first it seemed marginally useful - if you had something you wanted to sell locally, local crime info. Then it became a place to hold fights about dog poop (whose dog left the mess on my lawn!). Then it started to get political - "why are our dues paying for votive candles at Christmas when I don't observe Christmas?? etc).

Then it became filled with ads - endless ads for food delivery service, cell service, etc.

Finally - someone put up a post asking for people to contact their congressmen so that this wall impasse would end - people are getting hurt.

Out pop the MAGAs in force. Blatant racism, xenophobia, "you must respect the office of the president" type of stuff. And worse.

So - not needing one more thing to get my blood boiling, I deactivated - felt good. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter will soon follow. Amazing how tools that can be used for such good get so quickly coopted by those just wanting to sell you shit, or start fights.

As I understand it the app is highly local - you are seeing posts by neighbors. It's also somewhat anonymized in that your address isn't entirely spelled out

From what she tells me, there appear to be just a few highly active people in the local Next Door group who actively scrub posts they disagree with. For a while she couldn't figure out why posts disappeared. Then she stumbled across them in the Classified section. As she explains it, apparently anybody can move things and Classified is like an unsearchable black hole, so a handful of people are trying to keep their online neighborhood "pure" by hiding anything that deviates from the view through their tangerine-colored glasses

And anonymous means there is no record she can find of who moves things, and no way to stop it from being abused

It does seem like it could be useful, but people will probably screw it up.

sidewalk issues, roadway dangers and who should be responsible for them. We do have our share of dog poop discussions.

I have never responded to any messages but I have made donations based on some things that were posted.

Mostly I just read it to laugh at who cares about what.

we pretty much keep to ourselves anyway (except when my garden speaking gets me "out there" - which always seems to be fine)

it is full of magats. Even the person who "runs" is a magat.

And they love to complain about everything, especially the USPS.

I tried addressing some of the comments and I was called many a bad word. Won't stop me though.

Politically-tinged comments are pretty rare. Most griping is about new bicycle lanes that clog up car traffic and the cops not seeming to care much about car break-ins. And coyotes.

Seems to me that most of the posts are Lost or Found dogs. Or people looking for or offering services. (Lawn up keep, housekeepers, repairs. Etc.) This morning there were several people reporting what they thought was a gunshot. My husband heard it (5:30 a.m.) and thought it sounded like an 18 Wheeler tire blowing out on the interstate.....not too many blocks away.

Don’t recall any political posts. I am in NW FL.....very, very red part of the state and crawling with trumpies.
