Im a dumb ass I love choppers I recently had a Harley rocker. Sold it bought a used Tacoma extended cab I needed a truck haul fire wood and I like 4 wheel drive winter weather . So a guy I work with is going thru divorce and is strapped for cash , so I got a decent price on this fury nice bike.
Customed out with after market pipes and bars. So we went to transfer the title today and my wife saw me grabbing my carhart body suit face hood . Your not gonna ride it home why dont you haul it on the trailer, I said its only nine miles Ill be ok. I was a idiot to think Id be ok going nine miles in 29 degree weather , its parked in garage waiting for spring.

(16,955 posts)One morning it was 49 degrees and I knew it would be in the high 60's in the afternoon - I figured "What the hell - ride the Harley!"
Got 5 miles, turned around and went back for the car.
NEW RULE: NEVER under 60!
I just can't imagine what you did!!!!

The worst part was the sore leg from kick-starting it with that cold 30-weight in the motor.
The best part: I was single at the time, nobody to tell me what a moron I was.
Ain't winter cabin-fever fun?

(13,947 posts)You always get good deals in the dead of winter... getting it home was the problem. I dressed for the occasion.. I looked like the Pillsbury dough boy with all the layers/boots and gloves.
Still froze my ass off and then it started to snow...... Uffda it was cold..
Neat bike though... first with a counter rotating balance shaft.. smooth for a vertical twin...

Winter awesome deal on bikes

(23,384 posts)I'd just finished lapping valves, putting engine back together, setting valves and timing. Easy to do in the warmth of my living room (did I mention I was single at the time?)
But after it sat in the garage for a week, I just had to see if the dang thing was going to work. Success. No counter balance, That '68 Bonneville vibrated like crazy, but ran great. Then I was able to ignore it until spring arrived.

(13,947 posts)The first "new" bike I bought was a '71 Honda 350.. I called it the buzz bomb. Anything over 3500 rpm and everything buzzed... My buddy called his the E.B.J. aka the eye ball jiggler!!

(7,518 posts)at 5 degrees. Couldn't get off when I got there. Had a Triumph Bonneville with spring loaded skis so you could ride in snow. Did that a couple times then decided that was stupid.

(29,779 posts)about 2.5 hours from our home. It was early May, and unusually cold I think about 40s .......he went, came back and shook from the cold for about 2 hours in a hot bath. I kept filling the tub up when it got a little cool, said he never do that again, EVER

(7,028 posts)it was about 50 degrees out. Time to go home it was 39 and sleeting. Needless to say quite a butt puckering ride not to mention f-ing cold.

(53,410 posts)It was always after I made a move to give a motorcycle room. Usually when I saw then in the rear view mirror coming up between the cars in a freeway. I move a bit to the right to give them space.
Once I started to pull out into a left lane on the freeway which was the commuter lane because it was close to my exit and OK for cars to access the exit. In the rear view mirror I say a biker doing the same thing and accelerating rapidly. I knew he would not be able to slow down in time so I immediately turned back into my lane. He gave me that sign. Ive often wondered if he was cursing me out or appreciating that I saw him and moved back into my lane.

(1,975 posts)He wasn't cussing at you - he was thanking you. It's sometimes hard (especially on hills) to slow quickly. I can't tell you how many folks who did the right thing I've bought meals for. One fatal accident on the Steese Highway took the life of a young man (Army) who'd only had the bike for a week. EVERYONE STOPPED.

(53,410 posts)Ive always been a rear view mirror driver. I guess it comes from learning to drive in Mexico City. You have to be aware 360 degrees around you ALL the time!

(1,939 posts)I did that wearing a snowmobile suit and full face helmet, several times, at temps as low as 0 F. I used a length of medical tubing to breathe through to not fog my face shield. Great Rides. Bike is water cooled and had a full fairing with lowers that let the radiator heat come up to me.
