It might have been you, calling from the future, telling you to steer clear of the salmon salad at the grocery store.

6. I placed an order with Amazon this morning.

Chotski stuff really, but I didn't want to have to run out to the store and I wanted to order them before I forgot. So, $41 of kitchen stuff. Thirty minutes later I get a call (computer voice) that says it's from Amazon regarding my order this morning for $77. If I didn't place that order, call (602)xxxxxxxx. I hung up, checked my Amazon order, nothing for $77, checked my receipt (it said $41 with free Prime shipping). Called Amazon to let them know of this phishing attempt.

They said it was probably a random call and just a coincidence that they called right after I placed my order, I told them it also may be someone in their warehouse or handling orders so I reported it to both them and the phishing notification system we have set up at work.

8. It might have been Nancy from Medicare offering you a back brace

That's the one I've been getting recently.

When they had live people offering braces for my pain I'd cheerfully tell them I had no pain anywhere and felt wonderful. It seemed to confuse the hell out of them. Then I'd thank them for their concern, set the phone down, and leave it until I heard the disconnect signal. I am not a nice person.

11. I've had dozens from numbers with my own telephone exchange

(the first 3 numbers are the same as mine). Since I don't know anybody with the same exchange, I don't answer - especially after the 4th or 5th try that day.

Scam calls have really gotten out of hand.

And, it showed my name on caller ID. Took me a while to figure out that they generate random fake numbers that are close to mine to insert into the caller ID info data. Most show up as "out of area" even though the number indicated is in my area code and exchange.

Just for fun, I answer some of them and tell them "I will not do business with any firm that posts fake caller ID because it's dishonest and immoral", and that takes them back.

But, my standard response I use is "I do not accept any solicitations whatsoever by telephone" and "take me off your list". Period - no matter who you are. You could be god calling and selling meditation time with Jesus and you will get a "bug off" from me.

Me: You're welcome to send me something by mail.

Them: Could I have your address, please?

Me: No, but it's in the phone book........

14. I have various strategems

Usually just asking for their full name, please, is enough to terminate the call. No matter what they answer, I just say again, "Could I have your full name, please?" I think my personal record is five times.

Or ask, "Have you been drinking? You sound drunk!" When the denial comes, "I think you've been drinking. Let me talk to your supervisor." Repeat the demand to talk to the supervisor until they give up in frustration. When they claim they are the supervisor, I say, "Nonsense; in your drunken state you couldn't supervise closing an umbrella!"

Make fun of whatever made-up name they give: "Moron? Your name is moron?" "No, I said my name is Mark!" "Then why did you say your name is moron? You sound confused." "No, I said my name is Mark." "Oh, now you say your name is mark, not moron. Call again when you figure out what your name is."

Some even seem to hesitate when asked the name of the company they're representing. I do insist on callers properly identifying themselves and who they're with, as that's good old-fashioned manners on the phone.

But, manners and decorum seem to have lost their way these days.....

During the government shutdown, I tried going to the National Do Not Call Registry to refresh all my numbers and it was shut down. It now appears to be functional again.

I'm guessing most folks here know about these, but just in case.....

National Do Not Call Registry:

After your number is on the registry for 31 days, you can report unwanted sales calls:
