This is roughly the view from the Channel 9 & 10 Live Skycam on a clear day:
And this is a screenshot I took at about 4:20 pm today. You can just see the approach to it on the far left side of the screen. The Bridge Authority is requesting that high profile vehicles have an escort because of the wind and low visibility. I think I'd rather just get a motel room in either Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, whichever side I'm stuck on and avoid that white-knuckle drive altogether.
Pure Michigan!

(51,499 posts)I was on a highway, on the side of the road, pressing down on the brakes so hard, I'm surprised my foot didn't go through the floor boards. But I couldn't shake the feeling we were moving. Scary feeling.

(1,533 posts)It was fog, not snow, but the visibility was down well under 100 feet. Stick close to a road line and don't drive faster than what you can see...

(7,817 posts)I remember the first one.
The first incident happened on Sept. 22, 1989, as Leslie Ann Pluhar, 31, died when the 1987 Yugo sub-compact car she was driving went over the railing. Media reports from the time show there was some debate over what cause the crash. In some reports, witnesses recounted the strong winds that day actually blew the car off the bridge. Other accounts had the car first hitting the median then then traveling back across the lanes and over the guard rail. A police report issued around the time of the crash estimated that the Yugo was traveling as fast as 63 mph and that while the wind could have been a contributing factor, it did not lift the vehicle over the railing.
Litzner said the winds were around 35 mph at the time of that incident.

(O'course, being a human, I'd be running them down anyway if I was in a car and spotted them.....but that's another story...)
I just took this screenshot of the skycam. It's beautiful at night. Back to bed--I'm retired & have weird sleep patterns, sigh.
