(4,943 posts)I had to see a hematologist once because apparently my red blood cells are smaller than typical. Of course, I'm barely 5 feet tall, and 107 pounds, so I figured that made sense. Any way, when I got to the office, they handed me a parking voucher and a booklet entitled "how to tell your family that you have cancer." I was like, whoa, do you know that I don't?"
It was nothing serious and that was almost 20 years but yikes!
I hope that you have a speedy and complete recovery, Turbineguy.

(37,415 posts)It's just a strange detail.
I used to work for a steamship company. Once when I called them and was put on hold, the waiting-on-the-phone music was from the movie "Titanic".

(12,132 posts)at less than a thousand a plot. It was for her brother (my wife's dad) and his wife and their mother and her. Turns out this cemetery has become one of the most popular in the city (is popular the right word for a cemetery? Prestigious maybe?) several famous people resting there. Turns out she could easily sell her current plot for around 15k and she's seriously considering that. The rest of the plots are full now so none of them will know she went somewhere else. We are encouraging her to do it - she could go on a pretty nice trip or something for that kind of money. She worked at the same bank from high school until she retired. Never married, took care of grandma and helps take care of everyone else. She's in her 80s and has beaten cancer twice and still gets out to pull weeds by hand so the yard doesn't look messy. She deserves a break.

(12,132 posts)I hope you get to travel and that it's a long long time before you have to use the plots.

(34,139 posts)When my oldest sister died my parents bought four plots in the older part of the cemetery - two for my sister and her husband and two for themselves. On one side of the headstone is my sister's married surname and on the other is my parents' surname. My parents were buried on their side and they have footstones provided by the VA because of their service. Knowing that they would get those, my parents had one of a similar style made for my sister.
But her husband is now estranged from the family (even their sons) and will not be buried in that town so there is an extra plot. The sons don't live there and will probably not be buried there so there is an extra plot. My other older sister and her husband will be cremated an interred in a veterans cemetery so they aren't interested. I plan to be buried on my farm and my husband is still thinking about it.
The one possibility is that the cemetery will allow up to four cremation interments in that plot with a flat stone for each. Maybe one of my sister's sons and their spouse will use that space. Otherwise it may forever stay empty!

(42,862 posts)I'm sure there's a LOT to consider...
Where should it be? (My hometown, his hometown, our current hometown?)
Do we want to be embalmed, or cremated?
Do we want to be interred in an above-ground vault "casket-condo" or buried underground?
If buried: What will the headstone look like? Will it be two single headstones or one wide headstone?
Congrats on your purchase! One less thing to worry about!
