Poor Hugo the dog looked horrified, but soon they were napping near one another.

(25,930 posts)I think that rescuing animals, especially cats and dogs, is an important thing to do.
I'm a cat person and all of my cats have been shelter cats or obtained from a vet or a stray that decided I was her last best hope.
While I sort of understand having a preference for a specific breed of cat or dog, I also know that a local shelter will often have the specific breed you want, or you can contact a rescue group and get your preferred breed that way.
My older brother has worked with Irish Wolfhound rescue for a good twenty years now, and has given home to I don't know how many Wolfhounds over the years.
Right now I'm doing a lot of traveling, and so it would be irresponsible of me to have another living creature in my house. Heck, a friend gave me a poinsettia for Christmas in 2017, and I managed to nurse it along for nearly a year, then went on one too many trips and it died. Sigh. Someday I won't be gallivanting around as I do now, and then I'll take in a bunch of cats and finish out my life as a crazy cat lady. I've already told my son that if I ever have to go into a nursing home, he's to make sure he places me in one with resident cats, because no matter how senile I might get, I will never lose that love of felines.

(25,930 posts)My library doesn't have a copy, so I'm not sure when I will get it. But thank you for the reminder.
Sigh. So many books, so little time.
I often say I sincerely hope there is an afterlife, and we get to catch up on our reading there.
