Late arriving Chistmas present: what do give a wife who wants nothing, is perfectly happy?

That is my yearly dilemma. Well, this year, I got her something she neither wanted nor needed, and it wasn't nearly ready by Christmas, but it finally arrived here in Germany this week. This time, I amazed her for real.

A friend of ours in Massachusetts runs an art gallery that sells paintings and drawing by contemporary Cuban artists. She used to work at the foreign assets control division of Treasury, and thus knew what strings to pull to get a license to visit Cuba, import and sell work by contemporary artists. She got clearance from the Cuban government, too (this is over 20 years ago), and she was in business.

One of the young artists she is now representing is a mildly autistic painter who finds old, deteriorating photographs and paints portraits from them, fadings and spots and all. I got an idea, and sent her a cutout from a photo from our wedding. I asked her if her autistic painter would study the picture I sent, "age" it as if it were a 100 year old photo, and then make a painting from it, still capturing my wife's personality in the photo.

I didn't know how it would turn out, as this is something he had never tried before. But my wife was blown away by it, and that's all I cared about it.

Here is the result:

The Galeria Cubana owner doesn't remember the artist ever been given such a commission before.

Maybe I won't be the last. This portrait of my wife is petty special!

It did have the desired effect nonetheless

I have to run down to France tomorrow very early, so since we don't get to celebrate Valentine's Day together this year, she has this work to contemplate while I'm gone (I have to be in Sprout City Friday, but will be home Friday night).

A few roses did magically materialize today, just in case, but I think she figured out who they were from in about two seconds.

I'm sure she appreciated your thoughtfulness as much as she liked the painting.

She recognized immediately whose work it was, but never dreamed that she would one day be the subject of one of his portraits.

As a graphic arts student, I dabbled in painting a wee bit. IMO, this piece is exceptional.

If I were your wife I’d be thrilled to be gifted with this painting!

She smiles a lot anyway, so it took me a moment before I knew how impressed she was by this.

She never wants anything--when I ask if there's something I can do
for her it's always "No". She was raised poor and makes decent money now.
She figures if she can't do it alone, she doesn't need it.
This attitude has benefits for me, but is frustrating as well.

His name is Karlos (with a K!) Pérez.

The gallery with the connection is the Galeria Cubana, 357 Commercial St, Provincetown, MA 02657, USA

If you're serious, write to them, tell them you heard about this artist from their Texas friend who lives in Germany, and are interested in something similar. I'll bet you could get it done!

Topinambur may sound like the name of a rare giant South American rodent, but it is the commonly used name here for what in the States is called "Jerusalem Artichoke."

It isn't much of one. It consists of being the subject of this one painting! She is a social worker by profession. She worked with an agency that took on socially difficult cases, and tried to place them back into the workforce. She retired a few years back.

She has battled cancer twice, and two pre-cancerous thyroid tumors, and won all four battles. Our daughters will have to keep a close watch on their health, but at least they got her looks, and she has kept hers. Yin and Yang, and all that.

Instead of working on an impression from memory, he had to work backwards, going from a specific to an impression. Quite a trick, if you can pull it off:
