Kui Lee was the sponsor of my surf club "Southern Unit".

My buddy Chuck and I were the only two "haoles" in the club. We had green jackets
with our name on the front and "Southern Unit Surf Club" in big letters on the back.
We had green and white trunks, with a white stripe around the right leg of right
handed guys, and around the left leg of "goofy footers" (lefties).
When I was in the water, I had instant cred because of the trunks.
No one dropped in on me.
I only met him once when he attended a club meeting. I met Don Ho about that time.
He helped make Kui famous with his rendition of Kui's song "I'll Remember You".

Two years ago I visited Tamarindo, Costa Rica. I realized that at 67 I was
not the surfer I used to be. But there was a board shop owned by Robert
August, one of the guys in "Endless Summer", a fabulous movie.
I knocked on the door, and there he was, a surf hero to me, shaping a board.
He asked me if I was looking to buy and I said, no, I just wanted to meet you.
He closed up the shop and we went next door to the bar on the beach.
I bought him a couple of glasses of wine. So nice. I have photos.
Tamarindo is THE SHIT!

I’ve yet to make it that far south, and if I don’t get out of this truck and back in shape, I never will..
