The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIt's been a hard day's night, and I've been workin' like a dog.
I just got in from work. It's about a quarter after 5AM eastern time. I actually got off at about 3:45, but I have an hour commute and then I had to stop at the grocery when I got back in town.
I was listening to the Beatles all night last night. Sirius is doing a special on their Beatles channel. They ranked the top 100 songs by them as voted on by their fans. My parents are baby boomers so I knew almost all the songs as I had grown up listening to that stuff. That actually kind of surprised me, despite my already pretty good knowledge of the Beatles. That is a lot of great music. They were all great songs, and there were more great ones that I could think of that hadn't made the list. I guess I never realized just how prolific they were, and they weren't cranking out any clunkers. All killer no filler.
Besides the sheer volume of great music, listening to the list really made me appreciate their genius. I guess I hadn't really sat down and listened to all that music now that I have the ability to appreciate what all went into it. It has inspired me.
I'm going to pick the guitar up again. I used to play a little when I was younger, but I haven't in a long time. My wife has a cousin who teaches guitar, and I've still got an old acoustic that I can use to start out with.
One thing that I have always enjoyed about music is how free it can make me feel. I don't have a great voice, but all the same, when I'm singing along to a tune on the radio I feel wonderful and free. I was starting to get good on the guitar when I sat it down all those years ago. I don't know why I did that now.
I'd like to get good enough at the instrument to be able to write my own songs. In my view, that would be the ultimate freedom of self expression. I don't care if I never sing them for anybody except my wife on the front porch. It would still make me feel great. As Robin Williams said, "There is nothing better than being an artist."

(7,326 posts)Their songs are relatively easy to play. That's part of their genius. Very accessible and engaging.

(32,917 posts)What I love about the Beatles' music is that it transcends politics for the most part.
I hope you get a chance to play your guitar again. Music should be a part of all of our lives.

(6,834 posts)Frank did cross paths with the Fab Four over the years.
Beatles would not give FZ permissions to use his satirical version of Sgt Pepper. Delayed the release of the album for almost a year and was finally released with the inside and outside covers reversed.
