Whisky( or Whiskey) post!

Hit a liquor store in the big city recently.

I was going for a refill of the Michter's American Whiskey, and perhaps a new Rye if one was on sale.

My wife and I had received a gift card so - YAY

Well this is a mega mart kind of store. A chain that remodels grocery stores and has "Thousands of wines and hundreds of beers and spirits" - but they were out of Michter's American.

So I'm looking around for a moderately priced whisky and a brand I had heard good things about was on sale, so I bought a fifth of Redemption Rye.

But as I was walking out, another whisky that I had heard high praise for caught my eye.

Evan Williams Bottled in Bond Bourbon was less than $15 - and that's the everyday price not a promotion.

Well a couple whisky review sites talked about how this bottle kicked ass and the consensus is that it's a very good Bourbon - one guy even pulling out the old "A bargain at twice the price" cliché and since it's ridiculously cheap I grabbed one as I passed by.

I just poured two fingers worth - neat.

Wow. Strong oak tanins, smooth smoke and a warm finish that is much softer than its initial taste.

Now I admit that taste is subjective and I was predisposed to like this liquor since I had good things about it for a while now.

So feel free to use as big a grain of salt as you think you need to but this ish is good. I strongly recommend getting a bottle or two before this batch is gone.

No guarantee that Evan Williams can get the lightning to strike the next time they blend up a Bottled in Bond batch like it did with these.

I'll write up a post about the Redemption Rye when I get around to pouring one.

Slainte, Kampai, Prost, Gembei, Na Zdrowie, Cheers, and finally DO DNA!

Single Barrel that runs $10-$12 more.

Both are quite good and a steal for the price, although there are some years of the single barrel that aren't that great. I'll have to try the Bottled-in-Bond. That's a really good price.

The craft bourbons are getting ridiculously priced nowadays. Stuff that you could get 15 years ago for $25, goes for $75 to $100 and more nowadays. Not spending that much when there are fine bourbons available a lot less.

The Redemption is good if you like Rye.

was that with whisky price is a product of scarcity not quality.

So, a large distiller that hits with a great barrel year (Like the EW-BIB did) has literally thousands of gallons of product to move.

On the other hand, if a small craft distiller gets a great batch, they may only have 200 gallons of finished product to sell.

If it get's noticed at all, the price goes through the roof.

That's also why 4 Roses and Wild Turkey and other mega-large volume distillers are pretty impervious to year to year variation - They have several thousand barrels waiting to get blended to make the signature taste

Another "cheap" bottled-in-bond that I find hits more often than it misses is Old Granddad.

I can actually taste good liquor now - I think I put Sprite in the Grand Dad 30 years ago... Much as it shames me to say

12. Not spending $500+ for a bottle of bourbon -- it actually starts hurting me at $30 +/- $5 or so.

Of Hibiki 21 year old select, barrel strength single malt - Which had won a couple "Best Whisky in the World" contests.

It's WAAAAAAY over $800 a bottle now, since they only made so many barrels and there is no secret stash that Suntory held back to release in batches to stabilize the market.

We had saved up for quite a while to take that trip so we could see her family and enjoy the sites - So obviously in normal mode I would have cut off a toe before wasting a c note on an ounce and a half of whisky.

But her Aunt and Uncle dropped an envelop on us the 1st day in country with 300000Y in it. That was ~ $2800 then.

Notice that I did NOT buy a bottle of said whisky. Because that would be crazy.

Even if I had twice the salary I do now, I ain't spending more than $75 on a fifth for myself. Ever. And my usual choices are about half that amount. The law of diminishing returns is absolute, and we know this.

I'd only go high dollar for a gift.

And really, there's no point in over spending since you have no guarantee that you'll get your money's worth. For example, Johnny Walker Green ($50-65) is consistently rated as a better liquor than Johnny Walker Blue ($145-190)

On the other hand I had an envelope of cash... And that Hibiki was fucking orgasmic with a splash of water in a chilled low ball glass.
