Just found out I lost one of my homeless patients over the New Year holiday.

Heart failure.

I hadn't seen her for a few months, but a member of my integrated-health team was at the hospice facility when she died. She had no family.

Hell of a way to start a new year in clinic.

Thank you for listening. I love you all...

husband just retired as the (volunteer) chairman of New Haven's Commission on the Homeless. It was his life's cause and he has passed on his position of leadership to a next generation of people who are passionate about this issue.

My condolences to you and your team of caregivers.

I guess that I'm glad it happened in hospice, and because - more or less - of natural causes, rather than a more traumatic ending on the streets, but that's cold comfort, I'm sure. I'm sorry for the pain this must be causing you.

Not a word about it in the paper; it's like it never happened. I only know because a colleague of mine also does outreach with the homeless community.

Her work wears her down. I hope it doesn't wear your down as hard.
