I certainly don't advocate robbing a bank with a gun, but sometimes desperate people do stupid things. And no I don't know if those were the reasons he commited the crime. But elderly people have been known to do that. They get better care, shelter and food than being on the streets. A misdemeanor would have had him back out on the street in weeks, whereas a major crime may see him in prison for the rest of his life where he'll get a bunk, care and meals.
