Why would the man feed his duck yeast? Is yeast a treat in small amounts for a duck?

It's the write-up from the local paper about my great grandfather's unfortunate end (tl;dr version: it wasn't because of an exploding duck

I mean, I know that it's a terrible thing that the duck exploded, and really wish it didn't happen to the poor duck. But, after 110 yrs, I think we can laugh at it a little.

And to underscore to everyone that it's ducks, in general, that make me laugh (even the exploding kind), here's Gus Visser and his singing duck:
