I am one of those people who doesn't, for the most part, screen calls. I never know who I will talk to, and whether they will say something that moves me, and I want to be open to that possibility.
The call that I got was from a woman with a thick accent, and it was a challenge to understand her. She said that she was calling for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Part of me thought "scam", and part of me thought - maybe not.
So I asked her where she was from. I thought I was hearing an Asian accent. I was so wrong. She was from the Sudan in North Africa. Her country had been going through a Civil War, and her sons were graduating from high school. In order to attend college, they would first have to serve a year in the war zone. She couldn't stand the thought of losing her sons, so she came to America.
Both of her sons are now doctors, and she is calling on behalf of the DSCC as a way of giving back.
She is the type of person that Trump is trying to keep out of our country. This woman whose sons are doctors is from a "shithole" country. And, apparently, the K-12 education in the Sudan is good enough for them to compete in American colleges and universities.
Every accent has a story, to be told if they are willing to share, to hear if we are willing to listen. This woman is a US citizen, a proud voting Democrat. If ever there was a time to reach out to American immigrants, embrace their citizenship and earn their votes, now is the time.

(25,621 posts)It was just the random telemarketer call. He starts his pitch which includes his full name. I'm ignoring his pitch, because I thought I recognized his name. I respond, "Can you repeat your name?" He was a friend of my family's. I hadn't seen him for 30 years. We had a two hour conversation. He's an actor, who is rarely employed and pics up money via odd jobs.
