A good cup of coffee, that is.
I woke up from a very unsettling bad dream that I swore wasn't a dream. A bad thunderstorm, a leaky roof and water running down the wallpaper on the floor below. And I couldn't make myself wake up.
Woke up, ground the beans, added the cream, sat down, and sighed in relief.
All better now.

(2,448 posts)...I hate when that happens. I've been having anxiety dreams almost every night. Last night I dreamed I swam from New Jersey or some place to the Manhattan shore. I've barely even been in that area. How would I know what shore it was? Or how I somehow ended up there when I was trying to travel from Caldwell, Texas to home? Crazy stuff. Almost every night since this virus. Yes, coffee is real and calming, comforting.

(12,442 posts)The only place you could come out of the water, after a swim across the Hudson River, is the upper west side - just south of the G.W. Bridge. You can get in the water at Palisades Park and float down just after high tide.

Dog poo in your robot vac had to have been worse, though.

(30,613 posts)I like mine quite light - hard to find pre-roasted. Also, I prefer "La Magnolia" beans from Costa Rica. If you roast 'em just right, they have a very chocolatey flavor.

(14,858 posts)I drink a lot of it!
It also helps to coax material out of my tube, if you know what I mean.
According to my supposed "genetic traits" at 23andMe, I'm genetically predisposed to drinking it.
And all of those traits have been very accurate EXCEPT my hair. I'm SUPPOSED to have a thick head of hair, damn it! Lol.

(25,816 posts)I took it, following the directions, and sent it in. They finally wrote me back saying the test had failed.
So they sent me another test. I sent that one in, with the same result--nothing.
They said no more tests for me. I became convinced that I'm not of this world.

(14,858 posts)I'd think the inner-cheek swabs would be more problematic.
I brushed my teeth and didn't eat anything for about an hour before I spit into the tube, to help reduce other biological material at least to some degree.
I assume they gave you a full refund, right?

(14,858 posts)I didn't plan to ever take those tests, but my sister's children took the DNA test from MyHeritageDNA (which was the cheapest) and their ethnicity estimates came back as mostly Scandinavian. Then my sister seemed to imply that my previous genealogy research might be wrong, despite how I knew it was rock-solid with original source material. (And the ancestors were almost entirely from the British Isles.)
So I took that test too, and my ethnicity estimate was even more Scandinavian! About 80%, I think.
Then I researched the different tests, and discovered that MyHeritage had the smallest "reference population" (people of known ethnic background) by far! At least at that time. Maybe it's better now?
23andMe had the largest reference population by far, and the ethnicity results from them were MUCH more in agreement with my known ancestry. I bought a test for my sister too, and her results were very similar to mine. (And she was correctly identified as my sister too.)
Later took the Ancestry test as well, and the results "made sense" from them too. They didn't have as big of a reference population as 23andMe either, but much better than MyHeritage. They supplement it with DNA comparisons to other people at Ancestry who submitted their family trees, though, and they have a HUGE database of those people.
Edit: The 23andMe test was helpful for genealogy too. Some "Ashkenazi Jewish" showed up for me and my sister. So I looked through my old research, and realized that I never knew the origin of one of my ancestors with a very unusual surname. German origin? I had no clue. Then I looked through the records from Ellis Island (long after my ancestor had arrived here), and everyone with that surname in those records was listed as Jewish!
Edit2: And I later found out how the Jewish ancestor got here. Found his family among the "Poor Palatines" who arrived in Pennsylvania from Germany, after looking for some variations of how that surname was spelled.

(22,282 posts)carries Sickle Cell Trait.
The blood bank calls me every time they have a Sickle Cell patient who needs surgery.
So I need to find out where that came from. It is not limited to African populations; it is found all around the Mediterranean. Supposedly it can make malaria less severe.
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,858 posts)It's about double the price of the ancestry-only results, but I know that sickle-cell is one of the many genetic conditions they check. (Since you already know that you have it, that particular information wouldn't be very useful to you.)
A cheaper route for health reports, if desired, would be to just order an ancestry-only report, then sending the raw DNA data to a much cheaper site like "Promethease".
I've been most pleased with 23andMe, but different people have different preferences. There's been complaints about privacy in regard to 23andMe in the past, but that wasn't a deal-breaker for me since I was already "putting it out there" by getting tested through anyone. I just think they're the most accurate overall. They will update the results "forever", free-of-charge, as their modeling improves too.
Edit:
ISOGG gives 23andMe the highest rating for accuracy too.

They all have positives and negatives. If genealogy research is the main focus, then Ancestry might be a better choice. It depends on what a person wants.

(22 posts)Funny...the water-running-down-the-wall dream is one I often have during times of high anxiety. I was told it generally has to do with feelings of not being in control--of not being able to keep things at bay. These are definitely times that warrant such a dream. I hope you'll be feeling better...have a good day!

(25,816 posts)I built my house in stages. First as a crash shack/garage for a young and single bricklayer.
Then added here and there as I gradually had a few more bucks and realized I wasn't leaving
for a while. Then children and three more bedrooms. Sometimes roof leaks seems impossible
to locate. They cause damage and really anger Jeannie.

When we can't get coffee anymore, I'll have to go through withdrawals but I'll find some kind of beverage to make my day I trust.

(22,282 posts)Right now I have whole beans and some coarse grind for my French Press, and I am planning to get some more next time we shop.
I am also a lover of mild roasted coffee. French Pressed mild roast coffee is very very nice.

(86,872 posts)which is what I refer to as withdrawals. I have weaned myself off the brew in the past and at this point, I don't know how willing I'll be when the time comes for that reason alone!
