True Blood Week #2 updates!

Another great episodes with only a few hiccups.

I'm reading the various reviews about last week's episode and it seems like everyone loves the Vampire Steve Newlin storyline. Here is a guy freed from his shackles of hatred who is loving life as a Gay Vampire American. I think I speak for many of us when we question just who turned Steve Newlin but suddenly he seems like the new face of the Vampire Authority (since Nan Flanigan went the way of the stake). The interesting thing about the Steve Newlin arc is all the possiblities it could deliver since there are so many questions about how this guy ended up as a Vampire. And I'm sure we'll eventually see Mrs. Newlin back in the picture. Will she be converted to vampire? Did the Newlins divorce go thru? Or perhaps Sarah Newlin will become a Fang banger (or go running to Jason for support). My kudos to the writers and Alan Ball for bringing back Steve Newlin (done amazingly well by talented actor Michael McMillian) and building a strong storyline for him that involves many of the regulars in Bon Temps. So far it seems to be just Jason and Jessica but I can see it expanding once Bill & Eric return to Bon Temps.

If Steve Newlin is the best story of the week then the absolutely worst still goes to Arlene/Terry/Terry's friend whose name always escapes me each week because I could care less about this storyline. When True Blood first started - Arlene and Terry were nothing more than secondary characters that filled out the staff at Merlotte's. Arlene had a bit of a storyline because she was engaged to Rene, the man they discovered was killing all the women in Bon Temps. Terry had even less TV time - he was mainly that kookie cook that had a bit of interaction with Sam, Lafayette or cousin Andy. But not much. In season #2 saw the hookup between Arlene and Terry mainly because they were constantly under control of maenad Maryann. But once again they were really just a minor part of a storyline. Arlene and Terry shine when they are a part of a bigger storyline. Arlene is funny and a bit high-strung and counters nicely against Terry and his PTSD he got from the Iraq War. But giving them their own storyline, which started in Season #3, has been one of the downpoints of True Blood. Two people who could bolster a main storyline like the Serial Killer from Season #1 or Maenad from Season #2 just failed miserably on their own. Rarely do they bring in any of the other supernaturals or main characters and their screen time just seems long and boring. I'd love to see the True Blood writers do to Arlene/Terry storyline like they did with the were-panthars - Recognize it's not working and get rid of it.

Another storyline that's borderline for me is the Lafayette/Sookie/Vampire Tara one. It's not Arlene/Terry bad but it needs to pick-up some if it's to be a viable storyline. Sookie has always shined as the star because she was doing something crazy with either Bill or Eric but lately she seems a bit lost. The season is only on it's second episode so I'm going to give it a chance but we need to move on. Vampire Tara needs to hang out with other Vampires, Sookie needs to get back working with Bill and/or Eric and Lafayette needs a good storyline for himself. Now that LaLa has all these powers including his late boyfriend's Brujoha's powers (the Mexican Witch), he could work out well with the Vampires.

Wow, I loved seeing the Authority. That was some great scenary chewing and hats off to whomever cast Chris Meloni as the head of the Vampire Authority. I thought the touture scenes were well done (and scary - liquid silver pumped into your veins) and it was really interesting how they built up the Vampire faith with their own bible and goddess Lilith. I love the bromance they have built between Eric and Bill, 2 vampires once at great odds with each other. Either of them could have caved during torture but instead held steadfast in protecting Nora, Eric's blood sister (something not known by the Authroity). It was really killer to see Eric & Bill play their final trump card - that Russell Edgington was still alive. Who would have thought that lil tidbit could spare Bill & Eric from the True Death? Of course we got a glimpse of Russell, who is still recovering from his cement grave. I was suprised to see that his fang grew back. I thought once you lost they didn't come back.

Sorry I don't have more this week. It was a tough weekend with the hospital. I haven't even done a 2nd viewing of TB this week but probably will tonight.

Would love to hear your opinions!

Hoyt went off on his Mom. So funny! We are finally now getting to see how Eric made Pam. I have zero interest in the Terry storyline.

I'm loving that. Pam is exactly what I would have expected her to be - a Madam in a Brothel.

I keep seeing a preview of Hoyt wearing leather, cuffs and eyeliner. I wonder what's gonna happen to him? Mama Fortenberry was funny with her yelling at Jason but then quietly thanking him for getting rid of that 'red-headed' demon (Jessica)

Loved the Vampire authority. And that make up on Russell Edgington was very effective.

I do look forward to seeing what Pam is going to do to control Tara.

When Bill was on trial for LongShadows death, I think they said 3 months was how long it took to grow them back. I am loving the authority. It has been well done so far.

Christopher Meloni was a genius casting. He has a way of exuding authority! HBO tends to recast those that have been on HBO shows, Meloni was a regular on HBO's "Oz"

agrees with you. She calls it the first mainstream show where the "eye-candy" is meant to lure ratings from straight women. Not that Anna Paquin's nude scenes don't appeal to straight men everywhere, but the guys in this show rock the better bodies and looks.

What the hell is happening on that coffin? It's Pam's, right? Is that her?

I don't have a problem with Tara being a vampire but they wasted an episode. One rampage would have been plenty, really. But Pam's attitude was fabulous. And that madam story line is nice.

Didn't Renee show up at the end of the last season, even if as a hallucination? I liked him way better than Terry, who gets on my last nerve.

Thank the Lord no fairies. I hate the fairies. I'll only change my mind if Jason ends up being one too. It'd totally screw with his head.
My my my, is there ANYTHING more gorgeous than Alcide? Whooooooof. A-WOOOOOOOO!!!

Russell...yes...If he didn't turn Steve then at the very least he should get deeply, deeply involved with him.

11. That was the episode where all the vamps had to silver themselves

Ginger had silvered Pam in her coffin. That's when Marnie was deep in her spell and Pam wanted out of the coffin and in the sunlight badly. That's Ginger rocking on top.

I am totally with you on everything and I SO wish they would end the Arlene/Terry story line and make it go back to where it belongs, in the kitchen and in the bar. Thank the gods we didn't have to deal with her kids this time around.

I do hope they can figure out what to do with Tara.. and the Steve Newlin SL is really juicy.

Agree about making better use of Sookie, Tara and Lafayette

Love the Authoritay.. and all it brings with it. I wasn't sure I was going to like Chris Meloni in that role but oh, I do, I certainly do.

Bill and Eric working together, I love. I hope the Wolf thing gains momentum..Alcide is crazy hot.

Very sorry to hear you were in hospital, hope things are better for you.. thanks so much for posting.. I love your reviews!

13. You know I would say the same thing about Ginger if they suddenly made a storyline for her

Ginger (the human that has worked at Fangtasia these past 5 years) usually shows up every few episodes - mostly as Pam's human servent. The role was created as filler for Fangtasia - it's a business and they have a regular staff. Along with Ginger you sometimes see Chow, the vampire that replaced Longshadow after LS was staked.

The Gingers and Chows help fill-in major storylines. When Lafayette was trying to escape the dungeon, Ginger was there to catch him in the act or when Pam needed silvered or shots administered to her you'll see Ginger. But Ginger is human and really doesn't provide enough interesting material to give her a MAJOR storyline.

In season #1 Arlene and especially Terry were also fillers, although to be fair Arlene was probably more of a supporting character since it was her boyfriend who was the serial killer. Season #2 they needed Arlene & Terry to help fill-in for the Maenad story. But like Ginger, Terry and Arlene are both human and neither of them bring enough to the table to make an interesting storyline. If I wanted to watch humans have dysfunctional relationships there are 125903332 channels of TV showing humans in dysfunctional relationships.

The annoying thing last year was that the whole Arlene/Terry/'Crazy' Baby Mikey was really a long build-up to show that Lafayette was a medium (he was possessed by a woman who 100 years ago lost her baby and was using Baby Mike to replace her dead child). Did we really need all that Arlene/Terry airtime to show that yes, spirits can fly into the mouth of Lafayette just like they do Marnie? Not really. The burning house helped propagate the 'Tommy is a skin-walker' storyline since Sam was away from the bar all day and we saw Tommy skinwalking as Sam running the bar and scoring with Sam's girlfriend. But geez it seems like the writers took this empty storyline and felt they could shake out a few more minutes of wasted airtime by now claiming that the fire was actually started by some crazy person who served with Terry in Iraq. Now we have another useless human (the war buddy whose name always escapes me) added to the Terry/Arlene mix showing a storyline of something that most of us really are very bored with.

MAKE IT END

Ok enough rambling!

I have to applaud a lot of Ball's cuts.. but really the writers need to be a little more judicious and pare down this Terry/Arlene crap.. Actually I miss the bar and all the little side type scenes that add so much juice.. but they should never make those sides into main dish..

and actually you can ramble on as much as you like.. it's so interesting

Feral vampire Tara was awesome. Lafayette and Tara are two of my favorite characters on the show. I think the vampire Tara storyline will be really fun, unless they just have her run off for a while. I hope we get to see how she is doing every episode.

Russell Edgington is awesome, and I am very happy that he is coming back. The chaos he causes should be great.

The Steve Newlin storyline is OK, but it will hopefully become more interesting.

The Arlene/Terry/Terry's friend storyline is not very interesting to me yet, but it could go somewhere fun. It may even tie in with another storyline.

16. I think the Steve Newlin storyline wil explode when we finally figure out who turned him.

After that comment he made last week to Jessica referring to the fact that Bill (Jessica's Maker) is no longer the king makes me suspect that someone in the Authority turned him. Think about it, not only that comment BUT the fact that he's on TV now like a new spokesperson FOR vampires - he has to be connected to the Authority. If that's the case then the Newlin storyline will get really good. However, if I'm wrong then Newlin may turn out to be one of those side characters that probably shouldn't be given a major storyline.

That could also be big trouble for Jessica, since she "stands in the way" of Steve's love. She could find herself arrested, or worse.
