So, how hot or cold is it inside your house or apartment.

My house is about 78 or 79 depending on the room.

I am trying not to over cool the house and have a huge light bill.

I also have ceiling fans and excellent standing fans to spread the cool air around.

103 outside. So tired of this already.

The good thing is that even when we keep it at 80 it feels like walking into an icebox when we come in from chores.

That 80 feels really good after that.

To many places here over cool, like the movie theater.

It was barely 70 today. We keep it between 62-68 all year round.

It's been 65-67 in here all week. No heating/cooling needed.

SO had trouble breathing yesterday so I'm grateful that the heat has backed off today.

and it is set at 60. My bedroom unit is on medium cool. It is an older model and does not have a temperature setting. So considering the temperatures here in the 100s all day, it has probably cooled to the 70s now inside. Plus I also have two fans running.

It has really helped keep my bills down. If I can't take the heat in the rest of the house (I'm keeping it at about 80 since we're having a triple digit heat wave), I can go to my bedroom with my dogs, and we can be cool in there. It's WAY cheaper to run a window unit than a central unit.

at night. I can't sleep when it's warm.

It's been triple digit here this week, so I turn it to 83-85 during day, programmed to 80 before I get home from work.

I've read you need to keep inside temp no more than 20 degrees difference from outside, for central a/c. Otherwise, the unit has to run constantly to try to keep it cool.

So I have it set at 75F. However, due to living on the 2nd floor of a flat-roofed 2-story building (and no insulation between the drywall on the ceiling and the tar & gravel roof) I keep it cooler at night so as to "stay ahead" of the heating that will come the next day. Unless it rains, like it has today

that the heatwave over the middle central states has moved to the Midwest. This was yesterday's post for Dr. Jeff Master's Wunder Blog: http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2138

Today's post has a good map of the heatwave covering the Midwest and the South:

I live in the southeast...hot and humid summers.

When I'm at work I keep the house at 77-78.

When I get home at about midnight, I turn it down to 72. I also keep it at 72 during waking hours and during my days off

I set the T-stat to 70 before I go to bed. I just can't sleep with it any warmer, plus I have to contend with the fact the sun rises on the side of the house my bedroom is on and I don't get up till 10:30 or 11AM.

I know it can get expensive. I don't care. If I'm uncomfortable, nothing else in life is worth a damn.

On the other hand, during the relatively mild winters, I seldom use heat, I can sleep great if my bedroom temperature is 49 for all I care, so it evens out.

87 inside at 11 pm (!!!I need to go to bed) it is 82 OUTside

I didn't even look at it during the hot part of the day...I was passed out on wet towels in front of the fan. - and that is how I will be sleeping tonight - although it will probably only be a single damp towel as opposed to two sopping wet ones and wet hair.

damn it has been hot the last coulpe of weeks!

it will be nice out from 4 to around 6 tomorrow morning - so with that I will say buena noche!

But that was many weeks ago. After waking up several times thinking the house was on fire--with the smoke smell permeating so strongly-- I don't dare open windows now, even if it drops into the 70s at night.

Thank heavens the triple digits have left us for the past day or two. Even the mid-lower 90s seem "cool" by contrast. And, though I pity those living in humid areas, the truth is that once the temps pass 100, it is simply unbearably oppressive for long periods of time whether "dry" or not.

I hope everyone has done what they can to darken their windows that get direct light/heat during the hottest part of the day. Even without insulating curtains, just shutting the blinds makes a big difference. If you have south-western facing windows, I'd definitely think about hanging insulating curtains. I notice that my A/C kicks on a lot less often, just having done what I can to stop the mid-day sun from coming through and my indoor plants seem fine with early morning light only.

Place aluminum foil, shiny side out on your windows facing south and west.

Use heavy duty foil, it really works.

Then you can take it down in the winter months.

You can use blue painters tape, it comes off better in the winter then duck tape.

It has been used for years in the south.

Everyone stay cool, drinks lots water and sports type drink.

Had to get a new window unit for the workroom. the old one was dying. But I got it 4 years ago used for $50 so I figure I got my money's worth. In the winter I keep the thermostat at about 68° in the house and the workshop gets whatever heat seeps out of the house. I have ceiling fans in every room.
