At 69 years old I doubt that my ankles will ever recover.... because I can't not play.

(5,372 posts)A professional league of sorts? Or facilities where people pay to play?
Honestly, while playing is a lot of fun I would be bored to death watching pro teams. It's just not that fun to watch.

(10,131 posts)I don't watch and I don't play. It's dumb. I enjoy a well played table tennis match in the Olympics from time to time but I don't even like tennis any more. When I was growing up (pre-Title IX and before Chris Evert) we weren't even allowed to hit a two-handed backhand in PE tennis, so I hated it.
To me, pickleball is like wiffleball and kickball--it should be a playground game for kids and adults, not a pro sport.

(5,372 posts)Those young people in their 20's, 30's, and 40's should be playing tennis. They come onto the courts and act like they're hot shit... when they should be playing something more physically demanding.

(14,219 posts)Just the way I like it.
that's the very definition of a craze, it eventually subsides as people realize it just wasn't as great as they thought....

(5,372 posts)And I don't know why you'd think its popularity is about "sheep mentality". I don't play it because everybody else is. It's popular because it's genuinely fun.

(116,467 posts)I have a cousin who's totally into it and he has fun, and that's great. But anything that involves exercise combined with hanging out with enthusiastic people is not on my list of things to do.

(5,372 posts)Tennis is quite demanding for somebody my age. Pickleball is not.

(116,467 posts)I don't mind undemanding exercise - I do a lot of walking - but I don't want to hang out with enthusiastic people.

(5,372 posts)Typically, you show up to one of the public parks and get into a doubles game with people you might have already seen but don't really know....
So last night I was paired with this lady probably about 10 years my junior (I'm 69). We were barely two points into the game when she starts bossing me around.... "you're playing too far back", "you need to hit it lower and deeper", "stop hitting it to him, hit it to her!"... when already I couldn't take it any more and replied back "stop bossing me around and just let me play." Expecting that would be the end of that.... oh noooooooo.... she replied "oh, so you just want to play? I would never have known."
I'm going to be avoiding that salty woman from now on. LOL
