The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo I had a heart attack a week ago Sunday.
I'm doing fine, but lifestyle changes have to be done.
It was fucking scary as the pain was incredible. Morphine, then fentanyl, and the pain just got worse and worse.
Then a stent inserted from a artery in my groin and poof it was over.
Glad to be here.

(33,303 posts)I was stoned out of my mind, but it was just gone within minutes. I didn't even realise the doctor had done it. I looked around he was gone and I asked where did he go. Nurse said it's done already.

(17,995 posts)His Doctor kept giving him physical therapy. I wanted him to change Doctors.
This morning he had chest pains. Surgery and one stent. He was texting me later.
You both are lucky guys. He goes home tomorrow.

(17,360 posts)My husband had heart attack 4 years ago. I recommend this book to everyone I come across open to lifestyle changes. If you are offered cardio rehab, go for it. It is typically a small gym staffed by trainers and healthcare professionals. Husband did it and after required 6 months he signed up to go back (on a self paced approach, not guided by professionals). Here are two must watch movies Game Changers and Forks over Knives.

(8,292 posts)A decade ago and he has eaten meat about 10 times since. Im furious about that.
It makes it so hard to go out to eat because I have diagnosed food allergies and he decides to stop eating meat! Even at home, we eat separate meals because of his insistence of being vegetarian. Now he suffers with Vit B deficiencies and Vit D deficiency pain. His total cholesterol was less than 200 and now its unregistered in bloodwork. He looks like a walking skeleton and is eating constantly because he cant get full. Be careful with those recommendations because some go overboard.

(12,174 posts)and have none of the problems you describe. He might want to get some guidance from a nutritionist or veg-friendly doc.
Hope you can both accommodate your dietary needs.

(972 posts)A Nutrition course was required as part of my Culinary Arts degree, the instructor was a Vegetarian. She brought up this type of situation during the course of the class; people that go vegetarian often are unaware that it is necessary to watch out for a lack of certain nutrients that are in substantially lower quantities in vegetables. Calcium, some B vitamins, Taurine, for example.
Please have him consult with a nutritionist, the increase of vegetarianism over the last couple decades has resulted in a market for supplements that take care of these.
Although Internet research can be useful, there is often a lot of opinion and "woo" out there, so be very careful to check for peer-reviewed source material. It can be a source of broad high level information, enough to let someone know what questions to ask, but you need to find a qualified expert.
Information is a powerful tool while lack of information is a terrible handicap.

(17,360 posts)Though these days even non vegetarian/vegans dont get enough B12. I have a friend group of 10 or so mostly vegans and a couple vegetarians and weve all been extremely healthy by learning about nutrition and eating balanced diets of beans, legumes and other vegetables and not being afraid of starches like potatoes and pasta.
Each to his own, but there is no better diet that Im aware of (and Ive done plenty of research and attended education events by well respected medical and nutrition experts) to prevent and reverse heart disease than a plant based one. But to your point, you certainly wont be getting the nutrition you need if all you eat is salad 🙂
Best of luck to you.

Lots of advice out there. Turns out that the truths declaimed by nutritionists over decades are under assault. The old Food Pyramid has crumbled. It's hard to know what to eat and when to eat. Just about everything is challenged by someone. I think maybe the most widely accepted guidance I've come across is to not smoke and get regular exercise. Also maybe don't drink too much. Otherwise, it's a combat zone.

(11,666 posts)Just a feeling of discomfort similar to indigestion. Had it off and on for a couple days then drove myself to the emergency room. I was out of my hometown and knew no doctors in this town. A blood test clearly showed it was a heart attack so I was wheeled into the OR and had a stent implanted. Been good to go ever since. Glad I didnt ignore it or Id be pushing up daisies. Obviously you couldnt ignore yours. The only upside to intense pain. I hope your next 16 years post attack are as uneventful (health wise) as mine.
