I turned 65 yesterday, so I am now considered elderly.

I have found that my heating pad and my back scratcher are very helpful. I look forward to finding more help for my quickly aging body. And cutting out most news is good for my zen. I hope everyone finds something that makes life easier and happier.

José Cuervo es mi amigo tambien.
A shot of tequila, no worm, please, or a margarita lightly salted helps me adjust my attitude and relax those aching muscles. L-5 has given me trouble since I was t-boned by a drunk driver back in the last millennium. Oy.

I have a “prescription” from my Auntie Kay, of blessed memory, for one adult beverage a day. Hers was another generation, and I don’t usually use that Rx everyday.😉

Her doctor really did prescribe her favorite adult beverage, a Manhattan, to be taken each evening to relieve stress. Every night when Uncle Leroy got home from the Post Office, and instead of rushing right to the dinner table, they would sit down together, have their Manhattan, chat about their day and the news. Uncle Leroy would unwind from his day and Auntie Kay would relax, too. They created their own Shalom bayit, Peace in their home. Crazy in love until they breathed their last breaths. They built that.

After Uncle Leroy died, my sweet dad would call his sister Kay every evening and chat for at least an hour. She had her Manhattan, dad had his Seagrams 7, every evening until Auntie Kay died, years and years later. They grew closer than they’d ever been before. It was beautiful to see. As an aside, my daughter and the son of my heart she brought to our family (thank you Sharon) were married on the 70-somethingth anniversary of Auntie Kay and Uncle Leroy’s wedding.

When 3 of 4 grandparents were alcoholics, in the jargon of those days, I grew up knowing chances were high that I could be susceptible to abusing alcohol. I accepted that it was up to me to drink responsibly, to deny the “demon of addiction” with my strength and my will, with my intention, with my might. I wrestled with that demon some in my 20s but came through it okay long since.

I have a glass of wine on Friday nights in observance of the Sabbath, and tequila or rum maybe once a week on average. For medicinal or ritual purposes, eh?

My aching back also responds favorably to my physical therapy workout, stretching with yoga, heating pad, ice pack, long soak with some Epsom salts, biofreeze professional strength roll on, massage, ibuprofen, using my good old TENS unit, for what that’s worth. I recently found a well-balanced hemp derived gummy that eases aches and pains with only pleasant side effects. That farm bill was/is a real blessing for me.

Oh, rambling on again.
Resting comfortably in no apparent distress. Hope all y’all are, too.

When a veteran Washington journalist moved to Kansas, he met a new neighbor who was more than a century old. Little did he know that he was beginning a long friendship—and a profound lesson in the meaning of life. Charlie White was no ordinary neighbor. Born before radio, Charlie lived long enough to use a smartphone.

May this next new circle around the sun be filled with love and laughter, good health and good times, and sweet Shalom, Peace be with you.

Keep moving. That’s my best advice. And stay hydrated.
I have found that I can do most anything I want to but it may take longer than it used to.
Recovery takes longer, too. I take 2 sessions to do the mowing anymore. My step-counter tells me it’s 3.5 miles to complete the task, walking behind the mower. Lots of water for hydration during and epsom salt soak after.

I’m closer to 70 than you are. After I turned 60 and was telling my mom I felt so old, she’d roll her eyes and tell me, “Child, age is nothing but a number. Just be thankful and make the best of each new day you wake up in.” Wise woman, my mama, of oh so blessed memory. I try to live my life so my daughter will remember me that way when the day comes that I fly away home.

Age is just a number. It is what is in your mind that matters. It is important to take care of the body as well by getting exercise, feeding it right, staying active in other areas. There are some aches and pains along the way, but those are minor.

I turn 71 next Wednesday. But in my mind, I am in my teens. I sew for a living, get exercise, eat healthy, stay informed, travel, etc. I also live in a Senior Living Facility now after 46 years in a house. The people here are much older than I am, but they are growing on me.

I've signed up for medicare part A, and am currently signing up for my SS checks that I've more than paid for by now. Oh, and did I mention I still work full time? Yes, I also have aches and pains and a lot of stuff that just doesn't work as well as it used to (knees , eyesight, back, etc.). I have just one word of advice: keep moving! Unloading truck, breaking down pallets, stocking shelves, cashier, bringing in carts and writing orders. Everything was about a "vulnerable" population that now included me! The pandemic brought so much tragedy, but also surrealism, and that was one of the surrealist aspects. I was still the same age I'd been in September, but now I was in an "at risk" age category, which also put my previous concept of 65 (just another year on earth) at risk. I decided to exercise an hour a day, eat better... and finally finish college! (I graduated from Berkeley this semester.)
