I gave him some very substantive information about easier and more effective ways of treating his diabetes than his current plan. He asked me where I got so adept at managing diabetes. I told him about my years of work with homeless patients.
He evidently used that as an excuse to launch into a rant about undocumented immigrants, and how they are selling Fentanyl to everyone, and preventing his brother from getting his cardiac stent surgery.
I noped out of there pretty quickly. But for the rest of the otherwise rewarding and productive day, I found myself cursing this jerk for trying to ruin it. He must have missed all the gay pride and trans pride flags flying in the corridors of the clinic, announcing, in Lewis Carollian fashion "We're all woke in here!"
Asshole.

How can you not know that?

(8,069 posts)I blame Big Pharma.
Or the Deep State.
Or fluoride in water.
Yes, that's the ticket!
We cannot stand by and watch the corruption of all our precious bodily fluids!!!

(15,303 posts)Don't know this, of course. T1 vs. T2. But many of us who deal with the condition know that we have to make wise and informed decisions - not blame it on the latest RW talking points.
Glad you like your new job. Sounds like a really good fit!

(5,067 posts)But then I have health insurance. And even if I didn't, my hospital treats people without it and sets up an affordable payment plan or finds other means of covering life saving treatments. And they sure don't care whether you are a full blown citizen or not.
As for diabetes, strict adherence to diet goes a long way in keeping it under control. Hubby had type 2 and we both ate a very low carb, sugar free diet which kept it very easy to control with a minimum of meds.

(111,275 posts)That question always got me through shifts with some of the most difficult patients on the planet, neuropsychiatry patients who came in with substance abuse, violence, and other issues stemming from service connected injuries.
Noping out of there was your best response, although I think you'd be forgiven by all and sundry if you'd said the "nope" out loud.
Hes the one with severely uncontrolled diabetes and drinking six sodas a day.
Really wouldnt want to be him

(111,275 posts)and there is no medication on the planet to cure that, although we could sedate them on surgical floors.
The toughest ones were the heavy smokers who came in for bypass surgery. I didn't sugar coat anything because I knew the docs hadn't. I guess it worked, only a few of them started smoking again and were back in 3 years for their second and last bypass.
In a way, I feel for the guy, I always preferred my caffeine with bubbles. However, there is no excuse for him not to switch to diet. Diet Rite is quite good, sweetened with sucralose--not the best option but it could be his gateway to aspartame sweetened soda.
While he definitely needs his screws tightened, that's not what he came in for.
And yeah, you'll have to see him. Just be glad you don't have to live like that.

(22,133 posts)One of my friends got detected w/ diabetes and he is always telling me that he wished that he paid attention to this diagnosis when it was first made.
Of course, w/o treatment and such, it's gotten worse over the years for him, and I feel so bad for him, despite him being a diehard trump supporter. So far now, he's lost parts of most of his legs, a horrible thing to go through. I wish that I could wave a magic wand and cure it.
Don't let these people throw you off your game, it's not worth it (and I strongly suspect that you don't let them get to you). It sounds like to me that perhaps he's feeling somewhat overwhelmed w/ his diabetes prognosis, and all of the other stuff one must do to deal w/ it on a daily basis.
Oh yeah, by the way, my trump-loving friend above, does come down to earth occasionally, and he does admit/agree to some idiotic tRUMP doings, so that is a positive thing, at least some logic is making its way into his brain.
But, I do hate the relentless progress of his disease. It's horrible.
Thank you for helping these people, they are in a hard place.
