(3,666 posts)I grew up with my dads American flyer train board that literally took up half our basement. He switched to HO gauge which I remember playing with under the Christmas tree. As an adult I wanted an N gauge board and almost got it finished when life shifted and I had to let it go. That is one of my lifes regrets. Play on AllaNO1bear, play on.

(115,735 posts)I think our dad (who worked for a railroad, in the management end) had as much fun with it as we did. But we enjoyed making the trains switch tracks and make noises, and shopping at the hobby store for specialized cars. The best part for me was "landscaping," putting in the little houses and buildings and trees.
After my dad had been retired for quite a while and my mom passed away, he moved to a retirement apartment/assisted living facility where he made friends with a man who had a train set on the floor of his apartment. These two old guys in their 90s were still playing with trains.
