If I'm making a grilled burger or a smashburger at home, it's usually some variety of cheese (American or Pepperjack) and nothing else.

I might add fresh jalapenos or leftover bacon if they're around, but the burger should be the star of the show.

Except for Five Guys, I go out of my way to avoid burgers in restaurants. I think they try to hide their burgers under 8 ounces of toppings and a quart of sauces - which makes a horrendous mess.

Probably makes me a snob but I'm ok to die on this hill.

But NO KETCHUP! I hate ketchup. I hate it so much that when I eat at a restaurant, I will erect a little barrier on the table in front of the ketchup bottle using the napkin dispenser, hot sauce, salt and pepper shakers and whatever else is there, so that I can't even see the ketchup bottle.

I've visited Belgium a couple of times and they don't even put ketchup on their french fries; they use mayonnaise instead. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Belgium is the origin country of french fries.

Also, on Wheel of Fortune, Pat Sajak occasionally castigates Vanna White because she puts ketchup on hot dogs. I'm with Sajak on that one. Ketchup on hot dogs? Yuck! I like my hot dogs with mustard, onions and sauerkraut, or with chili.

In one of my favorite movies, The Martian, when Mark Watney ran out of ketchup, I rejoiced. He was putting ketchup on baked potatoes! Maybe I should give him some latitude on that, because after all, he didn't have many choices, but still, ketchup on baked potatoes!? Incidentally, since reading that novel and watching that movie, whenever I eat a baked potato, I always think of Mark Watney.

On my burgers I might also put a slice or two of tomato or bacon, but the problem is, if you start piling too much stuff on that burger, it gets so thick that you can't open your mouth wide enough to get it in.

Getting back to the subject, did I say, I hate ketchup?!

Hamburgers square shaped for full toast coverage.

These two sliced tomatoes are the "buns" that hold my hamburger.

The hamburger is slightly seasoned with Lawry's Seasoned salt after baked or grilled. Sometimes I place sliced pickles on my hamburger, sometimes I don't.

There have been other times I place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of my hamburger while it's almost done cooking. No tomatoes, no pickles.

It depends on my mood.

Prefer yellow onion, but sweet onions will do in a pinch. The only side I require is some extra onion if the slab doesn't last for the whole burger. I don't know why, but the older I get the more I crave raw onions.

Glad to see some raw onion fans in a few of the recent posts.
