Looks like the 8th is right in the middle of 5 days of clouds and thunderstorms all across Texas. Today was the last day I could cancel all my reservations for the trip without paying, so I did. I wasn't really looking forward to the 12-hour drive each way, and I'm definitely not up for it if it's going to be cloudy. Very disappointed -- this was undoubtedly my last chance to see a total eclipse.
On the other hand, trying to look at the bright side, now I don't have to go to Texas.

(14,967 posts)In a fit of DEI worry centered on Trans eyesight, the Biden administration ordered NASA to seed the clouds along the eclipse path using jet chemtrails.
Christians everywhere, and Catholics also, should be outraged that this glorious message from God himself, our candidates father, is being blocked for such an evil purpose....

(86,936 posts)That I might be in cloudy conditions but I'm going for it, I haven't been to my chosen spot for almost 50 years and I'd like to see that just as much as the eclipse so even if the eclipse isn't all I had hoped, I will still have other things on the bucket list in the same location. I spent over a year contemplating this trip so I'm doing it, and I'm flying. My greater concern is that I will be flying around a storm I just saw for the last few days only to land just in time to drive in the same, snowy storm from the airport to the lodging place! I'm doing it anyway, I may not make it back there again and the eclipse is just a bonus of timing.
Making a vacation out of it so I plan to enjoy my trip not matter what. But I understand your decision, I would do the same otherwise.

(7,575 posts)I learned that even with cloud cover we will experience the darkness effect of our surroundings - which to me is more fascinating than the sun itself. Also to see how pets and birds react.

My west coast kids and families are coming, so they will be part of the masses.

(10,793 posts)... right in the middle of the totality path. Should be a great view if the clouds clear! Good luck!

(1,530 posts)The eclipse will be ruined by cloud cover?
Which is exactly what happened the last time i was in the right geography to see a close to complete eclipse.
Got real dark for a bit then the sunlight came back still behind the clouds.
Was a bit underwhelming.

(2,031 posts)Yes, were supposed to get thunderstorms. Scattered thunderstorms. In the evening/night. After the eclipse.
You may have canceled the trip for nothing.
I dont pay that much attention to forecasts until less than a week out. They are almost always wrong, especially in spring when weird fronts come through all the time. If a forecast says scattered, it almost always means pretty fair weather until we have popups come through. Those popups almost never happen in the morning after sunrise, until late afternoon. Right now, were more expecting rain the evening/night before, clearing mostly on the morning, being able to see the eclipse (minus maybe a few scattered clouds), and then rain popping up again in the afternoon or evening. Its a Texas weather pattern thing that you expect only if youve lived here and been desperate for rain, so youve learned what to expect and when.

(10,793 posts)I can't drive 12 hours a day, so I was going to stop over in Amarillo going both ways, plus the 4-night minimum at the campground I booked (more camping than I really wanted), so it was just looking like too much unless I could be pretty sure of seeing the eclipse. The only other opportunity I've had to see a total eclipse, I drove 2 hours and I didn't see it. I knew that one was iffy, too, but it was worth the risk. This time, not so much.

(15,025 posts)I decided it was too chancy to head to real upstate NYS being early April weather.
We will get 90% cover so they are expecting darkening. The two of three I've seen we're supposed to have ?a bit, ?some darkening but I couldn't decide whether it was my imagination or not!
This time I think it will be a discernable event. I'm going to a big park by north end of Manhattan. Plenty of sky to see darkening! 👍 I hope.
I also got excited, then disappointed when it dawned on me with the leaves barely beginning to show there won't be any Pinhole Effect! 😑
If any of you did the box thing as a kid with a white sheet of paper on one side, and a pin hole on the other you'd see the siloutte of the sun being eclipsed.
Well, the over lapping tree leaves do the same thing. The most recent one ?2017 was ok - about 1/3 - 1/2. But the first one I ever saw (early '90s) to look at; that was close to ? 4/5ths. It was cool to see all these little siscle shapes on the sidewalk! 👍
If there's at least a chance of a clear sky; what I'll do is bring 2 pieces of white cardstock. You really don't need a box. One to project the image into. The other with a pinhole. I'm going try something extra. I'll have a pin hole on one half, but the other part a bunch of pin holes to see if I can mimic the many leaves that'd be over lapping.
Hopefully I'll be able to get a bench where I can lay the card down, and try to take a photo one handed with my tablet. 🙂😄
We'll see Short of definite rain or drizzle I'll go. Otherwise i'll go outside my building w umbrella to see the darkening, or look out my window if it's really steady, and not a drizzle.
