Was there a special title we gave the great actresses of the last generation?

Like Lauren Bacall, for example. I remember someone tried to give the label to someone from our generation (this was at least 30 years ago and I think it was Julia Roberts) and one of the grand ladies pushed back and stated that she was too young, still a baby, to be referred by the name.

I don't think it was a Grand Diva, since that can have negative connotations. But it was something along those lines.

That is what google says. I noticed a lot of other words too like talented, gorgeous, intelligent. Movie stars have been revered almost since the beginning.
