So, when I was a kid, I was on the small side, shorter and slight. I sprouted up my senior year of high school to 5-9, then after high school I hit 5-10 (actually 5-9-3/4) and was pleased. 5-10 seemed fine, and I didn't feel short, but I also think it was a sensitive issue in my mind from being smaller as a teen. So I went through my adult life thinking I was 5-10. It's what's on my driver's license. Made it through my 20s, my 30s, and my 40s never measuring my height.
I'm in my early 50s now, had my physical, they weigh you, but don't usually measure you as you aren't growing. For some reason, I asked to be measured. I had a feeling I was taller than 5-10, but was surprised when I measured 5-11 and slightly more than 1/2. I stepped off and back on and asked to be measured again, same height, 5-11-1/2 plus a 10th maybe. Got home and got the tape measure out and got the same measurement, maybe 5-11-5/8.
So what the heck, that's 6 feet in shoes. I've been walking around for 30 years thinking I was 5-10 and here I was almost 6 feet. I had a little complex around my height even, probably because I was so self conscious growing up about it. 5-9 or 5-10 would have been fine, height doesn't mean anything really. But it was a weird feeling yesterday just the same, all the sudden I felt taller walking around. Made me much happier than I though it would.
Either I grew after the age of 20 or I didn't do a good job of getting measured before that. Eitehr way, I think it's funny that I went over 30 years without having my height measured. The actual important stuff from the physical went well too, 120/72 BP, 65 resting heart rate. No other issues. Buyt maybe I am vane, been smiling a little about that height news for 2 days.

One of the University of Tennessee basketball players was 5'8" as a high school sophomore and blossomed to 6'6" before he was done growing.
Chicago Bull Dennis Rodman had a major growth spurt after high school - various sources say anywhere from 8-11 inches.
