For Crossword enthusiasts

I am reading a mystery book where the heroine builds crossword puzzles for the newspapers. (No spoilers)

Trying to decipher a possible scene of a crime she comments:

A crossword clue never makes any sense when you read the surface meaning, but that's because you haven't' decoded it yet..

Each cryptic crossword clue is made up of two parts. Generally. One half of the clue is the wordplay, and the other half is the basic definition

An example: Two girls, one on each knee, seven letters.

Patella

The name of the girls are Pat and Ella. Each knee has a patella.

Just though it was clever. I don't do crossword puzzles..
