Recently I have been giving away lots of books

Just keeping them because they are part of my life becomes stupid after a while. Several folks we have known over the decades have come to collect those they want or those they will give to a variety of projects including prison libraries, schools, college students, etc.

Now moving books can be a bloody nuisance as they are heavy.
One of my younger friends arrived with his golf bag. I had no idea anything could be that efficient. They packed it almost full, wheeled it out- two of them lifted it and placed it in the back of his SUV. I was impressed. From now on it’s luggage with wheels or a golf bag not boxes.😀

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been compelled to read a book a second time - reference texts excluded. In my house, books were just something else to dust, and that’s part of the reason why I no longer have a heavy collection of books to schlep around.

And then when we drop dead, family will just throw them out.
I’m downsizing- period. Less to dust.

I quoted Jack Kerouac to my granddaughters, saying that if you own a rug, you own too much. The message wasn’t received enthusiastically.

My partner and I got rid of everything and left the States with the desired 300 pounds we fit into six suitcases (with wheels), for two.
Now six years later in another country and language, we have filled six closets with newly accumulated stuff.

Just stuff it in the closet. 'nuff said.

I just downsized in a move two years ago after having to empty out my parent’s house. What a learning journey that was.
Happily in a smaller home and much less hassle. I don’t miss a single thing I let go of.
Also gave away lots of books . The local arts council was happy to have all of the large and cumbersome art books.
But the golf bag? That’s genius! Wish I’d known that tip.

Given the size of most airports, it's necessary unless you want to rent a fork lift.

Sometimes I've been able to give books to younger ones interested in specific topics, so it feels like a good match. And far fewer books to deal with.

Next to photos, books can be the hardest. Feels like a part of you. But, needs must.
Don't want to leave too much stuff to be dealt with when I am gone...

Thousands of photos. My brother did a great job and scanned the keepers ( there were lots of travel pics to purge) then copied everything onto memory sticks and we each got one. Then we were able to get rid of the physical photo binders.

Don’t know if this is a solution for you.

So many times I've not gone on little day trips because I've had to dust or clean, which is stupid because quite frankly I don't have that many years left, AND quite frankly I may not even touch some of those "treasures" again before - well, you know. AND I would have missed all those enjoyable little day trips.

depot is only $18.00 + tip, train is about $6.00, lunch about $10.00. Hopefully my hubby feels well enough to join me. There'll be a day that neither one of us can travel (near or far). Yes - "Let’s lighten up and enjoy the time we have left😀"

They were on film, she had them transferred to a weird, smaller form of vhs with an adapter. Now i don't even have a vcr.

My son will never watch them and they would just make me sad, so out they went.

I do have many pictures though

Books can be worth a lot of money. I have quite a few that are worth upwards of two or three hundred dollars, a few that are worth more than a grand. It's not easy to convert them into cash, of course. You can list them with an antiquarian bookseller and then just be patient and wait for offers. But I wouldn't just give them away or throw them away. That depends on the books, of course. Some of them are worth very little.
