Tadpoles

I have a wheelbarrow made of plastic that has a deep bucket. I left it out in the rain, and it began filling up. I usually just tip the water out, but I wasn't feeling that well and let it go.

The last two winters I have been treated to frogs croaking all around. Not one or two, but more like some Hitchcockian movie where the croaking drowns out your thinking. I don't mind this. It's rather comforting, and when something comes around, they shut up. So, kinda like a free burglar alarm.

Well, a couple of days ago I was thinking about tipping the wheelbarrow over, but to my surprise, there are hundreds of what appear to be tadpoles swimming around in it. These are black and look like sperm swimming around. Before you get the wrong idea, I googled what they could be, and they come out ID'd as toad tadpoles. They are not mosquito larvae. Some people called them toadpoles.

I have no idea how they got there. I started to picture some clever toad perched on the side of the barrow and letting the eggs rip, but that seems rather improbable. Next, I'm wondering if the wind picked up some fertilized eggs and dropped them in the barrow. There used to be algae in the barrow (that develops rather quickly) but that has been eaten, apparently.

So, now I am the foster mother to a bunch of frogs (frogs v. toads, who knows for sure.) They appear lively, but not well developed. I can't just tip them over. I can't decide what to do.

For one, I read that frogs can eat fish food. I don't keep fish, but I have crackers. I'm thinking about grinding some up to make a fine powder. So. now I have lost the use of my barrow, and will have to move it somewhere shady, because when the summer takes off, it can get rather warm. Next, I'll have to add some sort of walkway for them to crawl up and out when they are ready. But, I think at that point they will die anyway, because except for this barrow, I don't keep standing pools of water, because of mosquitoes.

I don't know where the parent frog/toads came from or how they survive the summer, anyway. What am I supposed to do with these tadpoles? They sure look happy! There are at least 500 of them. I don't have a habitat for them, they belong in the wild, and there's nothing I want to do with them. I can't organize them into a frog army. If they're lucky, they'll eat the cracker powder and develop walking legs, then run away from home. Join the frog world and learn to be proper little frogs. Or toads.

Any ideas or tips? Never had this happen ever before. I'm willing to sprinkle cracker powder in there every day, and I have some greens powder I could mix in. Would this work?

Never too late to read about frogs and toads. Just too late to go frogging. Wait...wut...I have been sent the opportunity that I wouldn't ever have had again in my lifetime. Let me think about this...

to this knotty ethical dilemma - and thoroughly natural occurrence. I'm somewhat amused this evening - but also applauding you your obviously loving (and very big!) heart.

Shade, yes - at least modestly. And you might want to consider some protection against predators. How about throwing in a good bit of 'green' material - clippings, leaves, twigs? Natural food source, as well as habitat - and critically, a place to hide. (although I wouldn't toss the idea of maybe throwing some freebie cracker treats. can't hurt right? and maybe you will come away, in future froggy lore, with a reputation as all seeing and all knowing benefactress, perhaps godhead .. )

Long and short - these little guys are pretty good at taking care of themselves. And - I know you don't want to hear this, but the attrition rate is going to be pretty steep - no matter how much aid and comfort you provide. Just the way these things work. So, give it a go - and then don't stress over it too much. (as you've already pointed out - your neighborhood is well populated already) Oh - and good news!, you don't have to worry about mosquitos breeding in this particular body of standing water ... That's all taken care of!

I'm going to wait until they are little four legged things, and then transfer them. The ones that have survived.

they seem bigger than they should for that. Plus, I've never seen tree frogs around here. Good thought, though. I'm no expert.

It's about Georgia frogs, but I've heard each one that she speaks about here in KY.

What mating sounds did you hear before the tadpoles magically appeared?

But, the tadpoles are black. Now that the yard is drier, I am not hearing them as much. They do sound like they're much farther away.

But, I've never seen one around here. I'm going to look this up tomorrow. It absolutely sounds like "ribbit." If I know what I've got, I can make a better attempt at keeping them alive. We'll see.

Thank you!

How to raise frogs from tadpoles
By Sara Welch - April 21, 2020

......Snip
Setting up your tadpole tank
Before you decide to raise tadpoles you’ll want to ensure you have adequate housing. For most tadpole species, you’ll need a 2-5-gallon tank to raise them to a frog stage. However, keep in mind the smaller the tank, the fewer tadpoles you’ll be able to raise. You should only keep 15-35 tadpoles per gallon of water in your tank. So if you’re using a 5-gallon tank but only fill it with 3 gallons of water, then you should only house a maximum of 105 tadpoles. If you choose to keep more tadpoles per gallon, they may die faster or become carnivorous. Also, note that larger tadpole species, such as the American Bull Frog, should be kept in larger tanks with fewer tadpoles per gallon.

Once you’ve chosen tank or container with adequate space, you should collect gravel, a few larger rocks, small weeds and grass with the roots still attached to line the bottom of your tank. First, cover the bottom of your tank with gravel. Next, add the larger rocks to provide shelter and, eventually, land when your tadpoles start to transform. Then, put the small weeds and grass with roots on top of the gravel. The tadpoles will hang on to them and eat the roots.

After you’ve got your tank set up, collect water from the same water source you’ll be gathering the tadpoles from to fill your tank. Don’t use tap water because it contains chemicals that can harm tadpoles. Additionally, water from a natural water source generally contains mosquito larva which can serve as another food source for tadpoles.

Thank you for the info. I looked today and most of them are alive. I think there might be fewer, but it may be my imagination. No floaters on top, anyway. There are still tons of them.

I added some green weeds on top. I do not have grass. Then I added some ground up crackers. These tadpoles were interested in all of it. They're definitely eating the crackers. I watched one at work.

It has rained one more time, which filled the barrow up to almost the top. The green algae has come back. Tomorrow I am going to put something across the top for temporary half shade.

I don't think that any of them will make it. I don't know what to do about the oxygenation of the water. I can't add just any old water, and the references say we are looking at several weeks until they grow legs. The water will have completely evaporated by then. I'll have to add hose water, which will probably finish them off.

So, their life expectancy is short. I'm going to add a rock or something at the bottom. There is an object already there, which is...a 22-ounce dog food can...which I accidently left in the barrow. It's not opened, but I can't feed it to my dog, anyway...I'm going to put a teaspoonful of greens in there tomorrow, just to see. I don't like drinking it, myself, probably the reason I still have some. I'm a little concerned about additives, but I doubt that they can live on crackers.

I guess, if any live, that I will put them out a small kiddie pool. That will attract creatures, but what am I to do? It is usually blistering hot, at least for a few days. The frogs/toads are already receding. By the time these things grow legs, if they ever do, it'll be too hot for them in the yard. So, now I'm going to have to do that, too.

What did I get into...and, this is like a religious experience. Where did they come from? How did they get in there? Did I kill other generations of frogs that were only eggs when I tipped them out? What's my stance on abortion (pro choice)?

So, you go to a political rally, and you yell, "Yeah, but what's your stance on frog eggs?!"

Well, I give them a week. I wonder if they could eat orange bits...

Could you also buy a few little potted plants and just let them float (or sink) to provide more nourishment?
