Driving home today, what looked like a battery light came on. The car tried to turn over, though. Wouldn't start. AAA man said it wasn't the battery. Was going to get a tow into garage Monday.
Car just started. I feel it's safest to still have it towed. I don't know what's happening and I don't want it breaking down on the road on the way to the garage. SO says try to drive it there.
What say the collective brain of DU? Tow or drive?

(261 posts)I got about 30 seconds notice when the dashboard lit up. I was just barely able to pull into a parking lot. I had it towed and fixed. I traded it in three days later. I had been having other issues, and the alternator was icing on the cake.
The fact yours restarted is the only thing that I didn't experience. Mine wouldn't start once it died.

(10,752 posts)Traffic here is terrible. I think I'll go safe and free tow. I wish I knew what that light means

(17,019 posts)When it comes to your car battery light, there are a few common reasons that it might light up. Those reasons include:
Too many car accessories are in use, such as the radio, heat or air conditioning, interior lights, charging cables, and other such items.
There is a significant amount of corrosion at the battery terminal.
There is a problem with the voltage regulator.
You have a weak or old battery.
A bad ground strap.
A bad alternator.

The AAA guy said the battery was fine. I'm kinda dumb about cars...Not even sure it was the battery light. I should have taken a picture

(17,019 posts)Start the car and have someone watch the headlights. Turn on the lights, then high beams then the ac. If the headlights dim there is something wrong with the charging system. Its also possible there is a bad cell in the battery. It will test ok but still be bad.
I used to help my dad work on cars.
So many smart DUers

(25,445 posts)but you wil have to get a ride to and from the dealer that you are working with. Sometimes they have people that will bring you home and pick you up if the long process to fix.Do you have friends that can drive you there and back? Good luck.

(7,675 posts)My battery light would come one, then go off.
Everything on the dashboard worked except for the windshield defog buttons. I actually needed to use those.
I told my mechanic what was happening on a Monday. He asked me if I could be in first thing on that Wednesday (he doesn't work on Tuesdays). My vehicle didn't leave me stranded miraculously.
It was my alternator that needed to be replaced.
