On the wings of big planes like the C-123.
Never anything like this, the big one still used runway.

(1,782 posts)hell yea. Now? I'd probably pee in my pants sitting there waiting to hit the red button.
Additional trivia: The ADTC was experimenting with the 104 back in the 60's and modified several of these, fitted them with reaction control thrusters and a tail integrated LF rocket engine. In an unrestricted climb from a standing start, they got it up to 119,000ft.
Then, refusing to accept not being the record holder, Chuck Yeager made a run at beating the 119K record. That was the flight that damn near killed him. He lost control of it above 100K and failed to recover from the notorious spin that these were famous for, ultimately bailing out at the last minute.
I'm pretty sure that record still stands for a rolling start unrestricted climb.

(19,624 posts)Interesting information!
That plane had a real "Buck Rogers" vibe to it.

Does look awfully dangerous. That rocket motor is a bomb!
