I realize that perhaps 'Girls' is like one of those ringtones that teenagers download - that high pitched squeal that only young people hear and old people don't get a clue.
I loved "Sex and the City", the one HBO show that "Girls" gets alot of comparison too but the reason I loved SATC was because I was the same age as those girls in the show and I appreciated some of the relationship issues they dealt with because some of them I dealt with myself.
But I don't get 'Girls' and I see so little appeal with the show. I mean really - I'm suppose to feel sorry for this girl who for 3 years had her parents pay for her rent.
And again it comes to down to this unrealistic show of young people living in NYC where they have jobs that would barely cover the rent of an apartment in a bad neighborhood of a small town (if they have a job) and yet the somehow manage to live in NYC where the one girl is paying $2,100 a month? Hell I struggle with a mortgage that is way less and I have a full time job with benefits.
I watched the first year and found it quirky, the 2nd year was tolerable but this year I just don't even care anymore. Am I alone or am I just trying to hear that proverbial ring-tone that is way too young for my ears?

(50,566 posts)I think Lena Dunham is quite aware of how irritatingly self-obsessed these girls are. That is part of the humor.
As for it being unrealistic as far as living conditions -- yeah, I'm sure it is. Carrie in SATC also had a way-more-than-she-could-afford IRL apt., as did the "Friends" bunch, etc.

(17,742 posts)I like how the Hannah character very often says the words that I am thinking but would priobably never say out loud.
I really like Adam, especially this season, now that he is growing up and coming to terms with his shit. He's evolving into quite a decent guy. His sister, on the other hand... oye...
Mainly, I like the writing. I find it very good.

(1,267 posts)I was also a devotee of SATC -- I have all six seasons on DVD and will occasionally have a Saturday where I stay in my yoga pants all day, eat noodle soup and watch a season.
I watched the first season of Girls, and found it mildly amusing but cringe-worthy in spots -- probably because Hannah reminds me too much of myself at that age. I lost interest after that and haven't been back.

(16,327 posts)I kept turning it off because I find the characters so repellant. Then I read an article in which Lena described her own character, Hannah, as pretty much repellant -- she is MEANT to be an ugly mess, almost unwatchable. I then tried to watch again with that in mind, but I just can't bring myself to care about characters in which I find no redeeming qualities.

(31,416 posts)Girls? Eh. Don't follow it.
I have a friend who has a daughter who lives in NY. They're subsidizing her apartment...and guess who
her neighbor is? Sofia Vergara. Yup.

(20,277 posts)I love 'Sex and The City'. Smart, independent and successful women - what's not to like. I have seen 'Girls' a few times. I just find the characters annoying and don't really connect with them. I'm not going to bother with it any more.

(46,776 posts)It is a story about young urbanite angst problems. And as you pointed out, the kind of angst you would expect from young women who have been raised in affluent homes who are now out on their own. There is a huge gap they have to cross from wanting to continue their self-centered realities as children, to the real world where they have to learn how to fake it in order to get the results they want.
When you think about it, playing mom against dad or vice-versa, was good early training for the kind of adults they will become.
Maybe, instead of little foxes, it should be called little socio-paths?
